What is a gastrectomy?

  • A gastrectomy is an operation to remove all or part of your stomach and sometimes part of your food pipe (oesophagus).
  • It's usually done to treat conditions like stomach cancer or oesophageal cancer.
  • Types of gastrectomy include a total gastrectomy, where the whole stomach is removed, and a partial gastrectomy, where part of the stomach is removed.
  • After a gastrectomy, you will need to eat smaller, more regular meals than you did before.
Information:

This information is about gastrectomy for stomach conditions, not weight loss. There's separate information about weight loss surgery.
