Getting a vasectomy
Make an appointment at your GP surgery if you're thinking about having a vasectomy. You may also be able to make an appointment at a sexual health clinic.
A nurse or doctor can explain what's involved in a vasectomy, including the possible risks. They can answer any questions you have to help you decide whether you want a vasectomy.
You may also want to discuss it with your partner, if you have one.
If you decide to have a vasectomy, you'll be referred to a hospital or clinic to have it done. There's likely to be a waiting list.
You can choose to pay for a vasectomy privately if you wish.
A few weeks before the vasectomy, you may have an appointment to check your health and discuss the procedure. This may be on the phone or in person.
Who can have a vasectomy
A vasectomy is a permanent type of contraception.
It may be suitable if:
- you already have children and do not want any more
- you do not want to have children
How well a vasectomy works

Reversing a vasectomy
It's sometimes possible to undo (reverse) a vasectomy. But this is not usually available on the NHS and does not always work.
