Cautions with other medicines
Some medicines can affect how dexamethasone works and can increase the risk of side effects.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting to take dexamethasone if you:
- take medicine for heart or blood conditions, such as warfarin
- take high blood pressure medicine such as tablets that make you pee more (diuretics)
- take antibiotics such as rifampicin or rifabutin
- take antifungal medicine
- take medicine for epilepsy, such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbitone or primidone
- take antacids or other medicine for stomach problems
- take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as high-dose aspirin for pain relief, ibuprofen or diclofenac
- take medicine for HIV
- have recently had a vaccination, or are due to have one
Mixing dexamethasone with herbal remedies and supplements
There's not enough information to say that complementary medicines and herbal remedies are safe to take with dexamethasone. They're not tested in the same way as pharmacy and prescription medicines. They're generally not tested for the effect they have on other medicines.
Important: Medicine safety
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you're taking any other medicines, including herbal remedies, vitamins or supplements.
