Dosage and strength

Combined ibuprofen and codeine contains 200mg of ibuprofen and 12.8mg of codeine in each tablet.

Different brands have different doses, so it's important to read the instructions that come with your medicine.

However, the usual dose for adults and children aged 12 years and over is 1 or 2 tablets, taken every 4 to 6 hours.

If you're not sure how much to take, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

Important

Do not take more than 6 combined ibuprofen and codeine tablets in 24 hours.

How to take it

Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water.

It's best to take it with, or just after, food or a drink of milk so it does not upset your stomach. Do not take it on an empty stomach.

How long to take it for

If you've bought combined ibuprofen and codeine from a pharmacy, do not take it for more than 3 days. If you still have pain, talk to your pharmacist or doctor. It's important to ask them for advice about ongoing pain relief.

If you forget to take it

If you forget to take a dose, check the information on the leaflet inside the packaging, or ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice on what to do.

Never take 2 doses at the same time

If you often forget doses, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicines.

If you take too much

Do not take more than the recommended dose of ibuprofen and codeine, even if you think it's not enough to relieve your pain.

Taking too much combined ibuprofen and codeine can be dangerous. The amount that can lead to an overdose varies from person to person.

It's important to get medical advice if you take more than the recommended dose of ibuprofen and codeine.

It can cause side effects, such as:

  • feeling very sleepy, sick or dizzy, or being sick
  • stomach pain
  • ringing in your ears (tinnitus)

Immediate action required: Call 999 or go to A&E now if:

You have taken more than the recommended dose of ibuprofen and codeine and you:

  • are having problems with your breathing
  • have chest pain or your heart rate (pulse) has slowed down or got faster
  • have black poo or blood in your vomit, which are signs of bleeding in your stomach
  • pass out or become unconscious
  • have a fit or seizure

Urgent advice: Contact 111 for advice now if:

  • you take more than the recommended dose of ibuprofen and codeine, even if you do not have any symptoms

Call 111 or get help from 111 online.

Information:

If you need to go to A&E, do not drive. Ask someone to drive you or call 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Bring the ibuprofen and codeine packet or leaflet inside it, any remaining medicine, and any other medicines you take.
