Taking mesalazine with other medicines and herbal supplements - Brand names: Asacol, Mezavant, Octasa, Pentasa, Salofalk, Zintasa

Cautions with other medicines

Some medicines affect the way mesalazine works and increase the chances of you having side effects. Tell a pharmacist or doctor before starting to take mesalazine if you're taking any other medicines, including:

  • laxatives, such as lactulose for constipation
  • medicines that affect the way your kidneys work, such as azathioprine, mercaptopurine or thioquanine, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin or ibuprofen
  • certain medicines that help to prevent blood clots, like warfarin

These are not all the medicines that may cause problems if you take them with mesalazine. For a full list, see the leaflet inside your medicine packet.

Mixing mesalazine with herbal remedies and supplements

There's not enough information to say that complementary medicines, herbal remedies and supplements are safe to take with mesalazine. They’re not tested in the same way as pharmacy and prescription medicines. They’re generally not tested for the effect they have on other medicines.

Important: Medicine safety

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you're taking any other medicines, including herbal remedies, vitamins or supplements.
