Dosage and how to take peppermint oil

Dosage

The usual dose of peppermint oil capsules, for adults and children aged 12 years and over, is 1 capsule, taken 3 times a day until your symptoms get better.

You can increase this to 2 capsules, taken 3 times a day, if 1 capsule does not help your symptoms.

How to take peppermint oil capsules

It's best to take peppermint oil capsules around 30 to 60 minutes before food (which can be a meal or snack).

Swallow the capsules whole, with water. Do not break or chew them.

Leave a gap of at least 2 hours between taking a dose of peppermint oil and taking an indigestion medicine. This allows the peppermint oil capsules to work properly.

How long to take it for

If you buy peppermint oil from a pharmacy or shop, do not take it for longer than 2 weeks. Speak to your doctor if you still have symptoms.

If your doctor has prescribed peppermint oil, they may recommend that you take it for longer than 2 weeks. Follow the instructions from your doctor.

If you forget to take it

If you forget a dose of peppermint oil, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for the next dose. If that happens, just skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time.

Never take 2 doses at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you often forget doses, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicine.

If you take too much

If you take 1 extra dose of peppermint oil, it's unlikely to harm you.
