Proxy access is a secure way to manage one or more health services for someone else, for example to:
- book appointments
- request and manage repeat prescriptions
- speak to surgery staff
- get information like test results from medical records
Some GP surgeries are trialling a new NHS service you can use to apply for this access online.
If your GP surgery is taking part in this trial, you can apply to:
- access services for someone else
- give someone you trust access to your services
We will send your application to your GP surgery.
Your GP surgery will do safeguarding and other checks, and get consent if needed, before giving access.
Someone with proxy access can manage health services for others in the NHS App, or by logging into the NHS website.
You can get access to your own health services in your NHS account.
Who can use this service
You can use this service if you are aged 16 or over (or 13 or over if you are a young parent applying for proxy access for your own child).
You can only get proxy access to a child's health services if you are their parent or guardian with legal parental responsibility.
You and the person you're applying about need to be registered at the same GP surgery.
Important: Only available at some GP surgeries
You can only use this service if your GP surgery is taking part in this trial.
Before you start
Discuss setting up this access with the person you're applying about, if they're aged 11 or over, before you start using this service.
Information for adults who want help with GP services
Information for under-16s on parents and guardians accessing your doctor's services
If you apply to give access, we'll send the person you've applied about an email telling them about the application. They will only receive information on what services you want them to have access to.
If you apply to get access to an adult's health services, we'll send the person you've applied about a text message, and an email including a copy of what you entered in the application.
You'll need to give details of the person you're applying about. We'll ask for their:
- name
- date of birth
- NHS number or postcode (using their NHS number is the best way for us to identify them)
You'll need to use your NHS login to prove who you are. If you do not have one yet, you can set one up as part of your application.
By using this service, you agree to the terms of use and privacy policy.
If you cannot use this service
If you're not able to use this service, ask your GP surgery if you can set up proxy access another way.
