Review titled Kind and patient staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Grateful pensioner patient - Posted on 25 September 2024
Visited as an NHS patient but could not have had better care and treatment if I’d paid for it. All staff from receptionist to nurses to consultant very kind and reassuring. Thank you very much for your care and patience with a very nervous pensioner!

Review titled Great staff and appointment
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I recently self-referred for knee pain. All 3 appointments for initial consultation, MRI and follow up have been excellent. All of the staff I saw were extremely kind and professional. Unfortunately I had a fall on tbe way to my follow-up appointment, I was so well looked after and helped. One of the nurses in outpatients even called the following day to check how I was.

Review titled Unhappy with certain aspects
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Jane - Posted on 18 July 2024
I fully appreciated my Consultant and the theatre staff and I am thankful to have my surgery at last. The nurses on the ward were kind and caring. My room was not particularly clean. The floor was dirty. I was quite poorly with urine retention and sickness and a fluid drip was suggested. Sadly the doctor who saw me was incapable of inserting a cannula. After 4 attempts she left and didn’t return for around one hour until I mentioned it to a nurse. On returning she asked if I wanted fluids or to go home? I reminded her she was the doctor and I still felt very weak and sick. She just was not happy to proceed so I took my sick bowl with me in a wheelchair and left being sick in the car home. The next 24 hours were awful but staying did not feel like an option. I was disappointed after what should have contributed to be a caring environment.

Good Afternoon Jane Thank you for your comments. I very disappointed to read your experience here at Thornbury as this is uncharacteristic of us. I sincerely apologise for the distress this caused you. Without your full details its difficult to investigate, however i have asked my Director of Clinical to discuss with all the team the incident as you describe. Review titled Poor first impression
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 10 June 2024
My first visit, to outpatients department. Car parking was a bit of a nightmare, couldn't find a space and kept having to make awkward manoeuvres to retrace steps . Eventually parked in a disabled bay out of desperation. No signs about outpatients department. Entered building, receptionist on phone, again no signs. Eventually told " through there, down corridor, lift to first floor". No way of knowing this without asking. Not in any way a welcoming experience. Luckily I'd allowed lots of time, or could easily have missed my appointment. I was relieved to be told I didn't need to have an operation but the manner in which it was done was very belittling. All in all not a pleasant experience.

Review titled Short Notice Surgery Cancellation
Rated 1 star out of 5

I was due for a surgery tomorrow at 6 am, but Thornbury Hospital only informed me today at noon that the surgery's not gonna go ahead. They don't have any dates for the next one either. It'd be helpful if they'd informed me at least 24hours before my surgery or if the hospital had some contingency plans for situations like this.

Review titled Mirrors
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mrs C. Fawcett - Posted on 08 February 2024
The quality of the Consultants and Doctors at Thornbury is, in my opinion, outstanding. It's a great pity however that I cannot say the same for the management. Changes in the interior design/layout have been taking place and, much to my amazement, I'm told that the total lack of mirrors in the toilets was a management directive. Whilst there appear to be mirrors in the Consultants' rooms there are none in the toilets used by patients or staff. Hence patients are unable to check their appearance before meeting a Consultant, and nurses and other staff cannot do the same prior to meeting potential and existing clients. Does "the management" believe that only women like to ensure that the wind outside has not blown their hair into a mess and if so do they dislike women (like me) so much that they have had all the mirrors (that we have always relied upon) removed? Aren't mirrors usually standard in W/Cs? I also have news for them, many male patients (and staff who meet the public) also like to ensure that their appearance is acceptable to them !!! It is perhaps worth my adding that, as an old aged pensioner, I still like to check my hair and make-up prior to entering the Consulting suite/rooms. Am I deluded in thinking that other patients (and the staff) do too?

Dear Mrs Fawcett Thank you for your comments and observations. Firstly may i thank you for the kind comments about the consultants at Thornbury and recognising the fantastic work they do at our hospital. I'm disappointed to read your comments regarding the patient facing toilets we have at the hospital. Hopefully you have noticed that they have been refurbished as part of our on going developments and upgrades. As part of this development within the toilets the provision to have mirrors was not part of the scheme. Unfortunately we were not permitted to replace the mirrors in the 'public toilets', this was a directive as part of Health & Safety. I completely appreciate your comments and the use of mirrors, unfortunately for us to comply with regulations this is something we had to do. I hope you understand that this was not a decision taken by the Thornbury management team, but simply following the directive given to us. I would like to reassure you that all patient bedrooms do have mirrors in them as part of the bathroom upgrade. Kind Regards Kosta Antoniou Executive Director - Thornbury Hospital.

Review titled "Great practice" from a wonderful team!
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I could not have wished for a better orthorpaedic surgeon, anaesthetist and wonderful theatre nurses when I had my knee replacement at Thornbury Hospital. I feel very privileged to have been cared for by such a great team, second to none and I cannot thank them enough and would recommend them to anyone in my position facing surgery. During my treatment I have also met with a great physiotherapist team and lovely catering staff and most caring nurses though sadly not all. I found the first nurse that was allocated to my care to be confrontational and argumentative which made me feel anxious prior to my operation and not very helpful afterwards and did not enjoy meeting her. However everyone else had a professional and helpful attitude and it was lovely to be greeted by their smiling faces and I appreciated their kindness and care.
