  1. Review titled Gallbladder surgery

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Gladys Gaye Wilson - Posted on 07 April 2023

On 20 February I went into Wigan Infirmary..Christopher Home..to have my gall bladder removed. I’m an 80 year old lady, and I have never had surgery before, and to say I was scared would be an understatement..I was terrified. But the treatment I received was second to none….everyone was so kind and understanding and completely put me at ease. The operation was a success and I was allowed home the same day.

  2. Review titled Accident and emergency.

Rated 3 stars out of 5

GP referred my 3 day old to A&E as urgent. We sat in peads department for approximately 6 hours, which was full of Scarlett fever. Nowhere was available for newborns to be placed to try to shield them from a department rammed full of a dangerous illness. There were no places to sit and some mums were sat on the floor with their children. I am 4 days post partum, stood for around 2-3 hours, very uncomfortable and fed my child stood up, before any member of staff gave me a chair. I was very emotional having not long since given birth and asked if my fiancé could stay with me given that I wasn’t able to use the toilet because the pram wouldn’t fit in there with me and it is highly unhygienic to take baby in but I would have been left with no other option, but was declined this due to the 1 parent rule. I could have understood this, if the department wasn’t half full of mums and dads together, which weren’t challenged. I raised this with senior nurse and was told “we do announcements”. No announcement was made until around 4 hours into our stay in the department. The rule was not policed properly and it was highly unfair. I was quietly upset and cried to myself as not to cause a scene, and it was only then that a staff member asked if I wanted to sit down and gave me a chair so I could feed my child comfortably. I was then told by a nurse my fiancé was allowed in now that we were in a cubicle, so when my fiancé came in, I was challenged rudely by an auxiliary, asking why I’d called my fiancé in when there is a rule in place. I explained the nurse has allowed him to enter and the auxiliary questioned who the nurse was and that she needed to double check, insinuating I was lying, despite being asked the nurses name and I was able to name and describe the nurse. (This is how I was made to feel by the auxillary). I am a nurse myself so absolutely understand the pressures the department is under, but the inconsistent policing of the parental rule has got to change. It’s either 1 parent for everyone or both need to be allowed in.

Thank you for posting about your experience at paediatric A&E, which I have shared with the department manager, who is very sorry that this was your experience, which is one they would never want for anyone attending the department. The manager acknowledges that the department was extremely busy on this day. Going forward the manager will discuss your feedback and reiterate to staff that everyone upholds the same rules regarding one or two parents being allowed to stay. If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact our team on 01942 822376. Yours sincerely Emma Swift Deputy Patient Relations and PALS Manager

  3. Review titled A&E visit

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I attended a&e on Saturday night (19.12.22). I had palpitations and being only 12 weeks pregnant with a previous ectopic I am very nervous. I had an ecg and had my blood tests taken and then was asked to wait in the urgent treatment care to see a doctor. I saw a male doctor and I wanted to send gratitude and appreciation to this doctor. After basically saying there is nothing wrong with me and that I just need some TLC, I walked away from that hospital feeling very content, cared about and that my worries had been heard. The doctor explained all of my results were normal, he empathized with my feelings and even got his decision making confirmed by gynecology to ensure that his decision was accurate. He never made me feel for one moment that I was taking his time away and was so kind with his words and reassurance. In this world where they are a lot of problems I need to ensure he knew I was so grateful for him in that moment and on that day. We spend a lot of time complaining about things we don’t have but what a doctor you do have. I am deeply grateful to you doctorand i appreciate you so much! Thank You!
