Review titled Excellent care
by MahesK - Posted on 15 October 2024
1. My husband is deaf blind with Alzheimer and with other medical conditions. I have looked after him for nearly 25 years; he has been totally blind for 10 years. After lengthy stays with no treatments in hospital, my husband always come home malnourished on discharge and unable t swallow or stand and needing 2 carers calling four times a day. I chose to provide 24-hour home care as the sole carer until August 2024. At home, I was able to re-able him with complementary therapies and home remedies including tailored nutrition. I did this because the NHS professionals expect all care homes to exclude such family efforts at re-ablement. It was with much regret that I have had to hand him over into the care of others. 2. Eden Holme accepts people needing extra care and support. As the sole carer with no family or friend support, I am grateful to the Manager and staff for doing their best for him. He has been rejected by most care homes because they could not cope with his needs. 3. Eden Holme Care is purpose-built with light airy clean rooms and several lounges where food can be served. 4. All staff, from the Manager to nursing and care staff, chefs and cleaners, are all focused on the residents’ wellbeing alerting co-workers electronically and verbally of any needing attention. Despite being very busy with scheduled tasks, the carers find time to speak kindly to the residents and appease those who are distressed. Many have left loved ones abroad to care for our vulnerable elderly and do so with smiles for residents and their families, whom they know by name. I was most impressed by these lovely people. 5. The meals cooked in their kitchen are much better than hospital fare and the chefs are willing to cater for the needs of residents with eating and swallowing problems. The carers seem pleased when residents they feed eat well and concerned when they do not and try other fortified options. 6. The NHS physio/OT triage team have discharged my husband without visiting him saying that he cannot be re-abled since they felt they could not make him understand and follow instructions given his disabilities and dementia. Without their input, he will never stand or walk again. The risk-averse culture in the NHS prohibits me from trying. At least the 1:1 supported activities in Eden Holme is stretching him mentally and physically as I have seen on their videos. The activities team are doing their best to keep residents entertained and stimulated. 7. Their registered nurses provide feedback verbally and by email. They record what I say about my husband’s past medical experiences, including adverse reactions to most pharmaceuticals, and his preferences – even if regulations prevent them from complying with our wishes. 8. The charges are very reasonable compared with many others in Chesterfield. They are not the cheapest but provide good value for money.
