Two primary carers attended my husband 3 times a day for the first year of their service to us. Then one carer 3 times a day who became a friend to my husband and was an invaluable support. He went above and beyond for anything he could. Unfortunately, neither carer attended his funeral in September 2023. This was surprising, given they both said they would, and neither called or texted to let me know they could not attend. Carers who come into your home many times daily become extended family members. My husband certainly viewed his carer as another son. I suppose it really is all about the money, and if they are not being paid sufficiently, there is no need to go above and beyond after death. My husband died aged 63 and all his friends asked where the carers they had come to know from their visits were. I have heard that this is not the case for other agencies providing End-of-Life services. In terms of day to day care, they generally remembered all elements of his complicated care. The primary carer continued to visit him in the Hospice once a day while I took a respite break. This of course was invoiced. Overall, this was the third agency we had employed as my husband’s condition deteriorated. In comparison to the other two they were significantly better. Sadly, palliative care can be very hit and miss.
