Review titled Flu and COVID vaccination session
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by David - Posted on 14 October 2024
On Saturday 5th October 2024, I brought my mother to a flu and COVID vaccination appointment at Baildon Medical Centre. The practice seemed to be open all day for administering vaccinations to some of the most vulnerable members of the community. My Mum is 92 and is able to walk on her own but only for short distances. Normally, for other appoinments at the practice, I am able to drive Mum right up to the door of the centre where there are some disabled parking spaces. However on this occasion, the gates were closed and it was necessary to drop Mum outside the gates by the side of the road. Mum then had to walk all the way up the drive to the building. No explanation was provided by the practice as to why the gates and the car park were closed on this occasion. The gates being closed caused my Mum some distress as the walk from the road to the medical centre building was at the limit of her ability. Normally I would have helped her with this walk but I had to leave to find somewhere to park my car as there was nowhere available by the gates. By the time had I found somewhere and made my way back, Mum had completed her appointment. We are thankful that this was done quickly and efficiently. However my Mum was not at all happy with the long (for her) walk that she was forced to make under the circumstances. During my time in the vicinity of the gates I observed many other elderly and/or disabled people being dropped off either by private cars or taxis. Some had help to make their way to the building, others did not. None of them looked to be people for whom covering such a distance came easily. There was alot of activity in front of the gates with people being dropped off or picked up with only space for a couple of cars to stop at any one time. In my opinion all this activity with cars passing by on the road in a relatively small space makes for an accident waiting to happen. Why was it necessary to close the gates and the medical centre car park for the vaccination sessions? Are you aware of the difficulty this caused some people in getting from the road to the building? Are you also aware of the dangerous situation that at times developed outside the gates with so many slowing moving people and passing cars in close proximity?
