Review titled A bad experience that has undermined my confidence in this practice.
by Judy Bradley - Posted on 09 August 2024
Following a recent bad experience my confidence in this practice has been seriously eroded. Recently, while on a waiting list for talking therapy, I was prescribed an anti-depressant because I was not coping at all well. I took it for a while, I can’t remember for how long, maybe a couple of months. The side effects I experienced were many and severe. It’s not an anti-depressant I’ve taken before. I spoke to one Clinician and one GP about this, asking if I could be moved to another anti-depressant that I have taken before and that I know I tolerate well. I informed them both that the medication was also not improving my depression one bit. Both the Clinician and the GP said that the symptoms I was experiencing were highly unlikely to be to do with the medication. One suggested lowering my dose so I could taper off, the other suggested raising it to see if it would improve my depression. Neither would consider moving me to the anti-depressant that I have taken before. Finally, in sheer desperation because I simply could not cope with the many severe, and worsening, side effects, I stopped taking the anti-depressant. I know you are not supposed to do this, but I was at the end of my tether. I did, as I expected, experience some withdrawal symptoms but I was willing to put up with those for the sake of getting rid of the terrible side effects of this medication. Every single one of the side effects, that had begun shortly after I started taking the anti-depressant, have now completely gone. A final point – I am now on my course of talking therapy and it is proving very helpful indeed. I mentioned this experience to my therapist, and they said that I needed to inform the surgery that I had ceased taking the anti-depressants. When I telephoned to do this, I got the impression that the person I was speaking with was not interested at all in listening to my explanation. In fact, I had to ask them at one point to please let me finish what I was saying.
