This evening I called into the surgery without an appointment after a cut on my leg had become inflamed. I was seen immediately by a nurse, who then asked a doctor to look at the injury. She prescribed an antibiotic, which was dispensed after a short wait. I have been with Howell Surgery for many years and have always received prompt, effective and courteous service - this evening was no exception.

Getting quite fed up with this surgery. It’s really going downhill in my opinion. For example. The pharmacy are quite happy to wait for you to arrive to collect your prescription to tell you the pills you have been prescribed 2 weeks beforehand are not available anywhere, but will not bother to ask the Doctor to prescribe an available alternative for you in the meantime. There seems to be a lack of communication and common sense. Also It’s extremely difficult to get an appointment with an actual Doctor, so much so that I think a lot of people just don’t bother, which of course can lead to undiagnosed problems, some of which can turn out to be very dangerous. Lastly this ‘closing for an hour between 1 and 2 pm’ is quite frankly outdated and old fashioned’. Why can’t they stagger their lunch breaks? I expect they will say they are understaffed and underfunded, knock on effect from Covid etc. However, the fact remains, this surgery needs improvement.
