  1. Review titled What is your goal in life?

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Lisa Sargent - Posted on 30 November 2022

I was interviewed by Thurrock Inclusion and have heard about them before but never took the plunge, but recently I've not been in a good light so I contacted them and they got in touch. It was like I was interviewing them. All they were interested in was whether I had a goal in life. If I had a goal in life I wouldn't be sitting here writing this. Why would inclusion be pushing this goal in life stuff at someone like me? Please do not think that everyone on your programme needs to be asked if they have a goal in life. I was interviewed and told that they can't do anything for me as I have no 'goal in life' and was signed off straight away. I complained and they contacted me again and explained that I still can't get anything from them as I need a 'goal in life'. Alright, I need a goal in life. Here it is. My goal in life is to stop people from being interviewed by these people as you do not need a goal in life. You need a life full stop. They are a waste of my breath and if I knew that when I was first given they were not worth my time. Now I know I have wasted my time over these time wasters. Don't forget your goal in life as you need one with these people or you'll be signed off.

Dear Lisa, I’d like to thank you for your comments and apologise that your experience with our service hasn’t met your expectations. Whenever we receive feedback from our patients about the service they’ve received, we also look into the circumstances to firstly try to resolve any issues and secondly try to learn anything we can about how to make the service better in the future. An important part of the assessment process is ensuring that our talking therapies service is the right service for the patient. You mention being asked about a ‘goal for life’ and it might be that there was a miscommunication when we asked about a goal for therapy; we ask this from all our patients as it helps to direct therapy and understand together what we are trying to achieve. For some people that might be a reduction in symptoms of depression or anxiety. Sometimes, the goals people have (or the things they want to change) aren’t really things that talking therapies can help, and we may then offer options of other services or organisations that are more appropriate for those difficulties; we call this ‘signposting’ and it’s designed to ensure people get the best help from the best service. We are sorry if there was a misunderstanding to this question as a goal for your life in general; what we would have wanted to know is what things you wanted talking therapy to help you change. I am happy to speak to you directly about your experience if you wish and can be contacted on 01375 898680 to arrange this. I would like to thank you for raising an important point of ensuring we are clearer when we ask people about their therapy goals so it’s understood that we are talking about what changes the person wants therapy to help them make. Alternatively if you wish the Trust to look into your concerns further and provide you with a response, please contact the PALS Team on 0800 783 2865 or via email at palsandexperience@mpft.nhs.uk Best regards, Mark Frost Clinical Lead
