  1. Review titled Excellent phlebotomist

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I’ve seen the phlebotomist at John Scott health centre twice now, and they’re excellent. Quick, reliable, polite and painless. Despite having low tolerance to blood taking, I’ve had virtually no anxiety sitting down for venopuncture.

  2. Review titled Unpleasant and unhelpful reception staff

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 06 April 2023

I was referred here for a blood test by my GP. On arrival I went to the reception desk to let them know I was there for an appointment, someone else was talking to a man behind the desk about his blood test so I waited behind him. Two women also behind the desk asked me if I was here ‘for that’ and gestured to the men, I replied that yes I was here for a blood test. They told me to get in line on that side because where they were was for the sexual health clinic ‘as it clearly says on the signs’ in a rude and sarcastic manner. Clearly those signs aren’t obvious enough, and if anyone had come in needing their ‘service’ they could still have easily got to their bit of the desk as I was not in the way. Once I was at the front I explained to the man I was there for a blood test and showed him my online form, the women basically began heckling saying it was a the wrong type of form, he should be telling blood test people just to sit down and wait because he was ‘just meeting and greeting’ and that if there was a problem with my form the phlebotomist and I would have to just ‘deal with it’. I went to take a seat and could hear them and another woman who joined them overly loudly talking about the system, how bad it was, and then about their lunch. It’s one thing to have chats with your colleagues when you’re not dealing with anyone but no need to fill the whole waiting room, especially when you are revealing issues with your practice like about rooms not being allocated correctly etc. Once I was called to the blood test I was again told my form was the wrong kind as it was online not on paper, and was made to fill out the lab form myself! I can only hope I did it correctly and clearly enough to get the correct results. I have since spoken to my GP practice to explain the issue with the forms and hope there is communication to resolve this issue in future. And I hope the staff at John Scott reception are reminded that they may be interacting with emotional, potentially vulnerable people who are feeling anxious about medical interventions, and to work on their manner. Being rude, condescending, dismissing of patients, and belittling of your colleagues is never a good look and particularly not for the first people someone is exposed to in a medical setting. I’d have loved to say this over the phone but no one has answered in my last 5 attempts to call.
