Thank you for the really positive experience I had today at the Barnstaple Breast Screening Unit. It was extremely quick and efficient. I felt completely welcome and at ease. The staff were so friendly and professional.

First mammogram experience, and it could have been better. I knew I’d hate it, but I thought it would be for different reasons. For example, the undressed part. Self conscious part of me. The tech was so impatient, gave unclear, poor instructions, (reminder, my first time) and she was obviously visually ticked off, and she let me know it. The tone in her voice left no query over how she felt having to repeat her sometimes unclear non-specific instruction. Being told to “relax, then hold your body back, keep this here, no relax, no your belly is in the way, move your hair, hold the other breast out the way”… actually I’m just breathing and I can’t tuck my other breast under my armpit, they just don’t move that way. I had no lotion on my skin, no deodorant, yet my skin kept sticking to the machine, pulling and stretching, that’s the part that hurt, but she did not show any compassion, and I’m now left with what looks like bruising incoming; not on my breasts, the squeeze wasn’t that uncomfortable, but on my sides and under my breasts. She showed no concern that what she was doing was causing unnecessary pain. I know I have to do it all over again at some point, but now I’m dreading it even more. If it’s the same tech, then I will ask for another, that’s how uncomfortable she made me feel. I just wanted to get out of there before I said something. Awful. Made a bad experience much worse. I left in tears.

I attended the breast screening service today as follow up from my routine mammogram. Very good service from start to finish. I only had to wait a week from being informed I would need further investigations. I was seen quickly today - had more tests and then saw the doctor. All the staff - receptionist, breast care nurse, mammographer and specialist Dr were fantastic - friendly, welcoming and explained everything clearly. Thank you all.
