Unfortunately as the practice has grown and become more automated so has the practice. The hours you can access non emergency care has reduced, so for example my son ended up at an A&E (we had driven 25 miles and checked in to an out of hours to try and prevent this(he had fevers some hitting over 42 for 5 days running)) to be prescribed antibiotics as the surgery does not take non urgent requests on a Friday. The request my GP online access is set to be open from 7 until 7:01. Also the website information on ask my GP states you can submit via this service during their opening hours. This is no longer correct as the online request system is only open 8-12am. The receptionist I have spoken to twice recently appears to read off a flow chart, which when you are seeking medical help is extremely frustrating. To be told your request could be dealt with in 7-10 days is information I can read from the online request form, via which I submitted my medical concern and clearly not the details specific to my case I would have waited 5 callers in the line for. There is also the patronising questioning about whether or not you have taken all of the over the counter medication available. I personally seek medical support rarely, and should not flag as an over user of the system. Therefore if I call I should not have to justify the frequency of my pain relief use, nor should this justify or deny me treatment. When I had a necrotising lesion on my foot no clinician checked how much pain relief I was taking before offering a skin graft, it was based on medical condition and the likelihood of becoming septic without it. Unfortunately, having been poorly since Thursday and over the weekend but waiting until Monday to ensure I use services responsibly does not seem to work with this GP. Logged a concern at 8am and still have no contact at 1:30pm. My likely contact for my current illness who is a patient at another local surgery on the other hand developed symptoms on Sunday and had been seen and prescribed antibiotics by Monday. When this matter is closed I will be moving GP surgeries, which I am sure they will appreciate as they are clearly working far beyond what is effective and I feel that they now only offer medical emergency support like 111, there is little prevention or early access.
