Thank to all the staff that did my husband's cataracts today 12 12 2024. Everyone was so professional and friendly. A big thank you goes to the surgeon who performed the op. Couldn't have wished to be in safer hands. Will highly recommend to friends and family.

Altogether a wonderfully good experience from begging to the end, very kind, friendly and efficient and the end result of my surgery I'm extremely happy with, what an amazing difference it's made colours and views so vibrant now. Cannot wait to have other eye fixed now Great big thank you to all concerned.

  3. Review titled Not totally happy

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by A Goulding - Posted on 07 December 2024

Spa Medica as a whole is professional, friendly, efficient. My 1st cataract op was Oct 11 and I left a positive review. The surgeon in particular was calm, reassuring and very gentle. I worried in advance for nothing especially about the device which opens eyelids. I didn’t feel a thing. My 2nd op was Dec 3rd. Unfortunately my experience this time wasn’t any of the above adjectives, surgeon wise. I’m sure this surgeon is as professional and experienced as any at this clinic. I waited a few days so I didn’t give a knee-jerk review but I am asked to let you know what I think. After pushing the iodine on a sponge into my eye the sheet was placed. Then the device which keeps eyelids open was pushed in place very roughly up and down. All the while he saying ‘Keep your eye open’ Difficult. Then he began the op. It hurt even though I’d had anaesthetic drops. So I raised my hand as asked, if I had anything to say. The surgeon continued. I said that I could ‘feel something sharp, it’s sharp’ The nurse put drops in as he continued. I had to state again with hand raised that something was sharp, it hurt. The surgeon asked if I wanted to hold someone’s hand. No that’s not what I needed, I said. The surgeon was rough throughout. I resolved to endure, it eased as I think the anaesthetic drops were now working. It was done. Everything and everyone else were as good as any could expect. I haven’t made this a complaint. I wanted to let anyone who sees this, if published on the website, that you must speak up. Don’t shout, be firm. Speak up. I wasn’t listened to but he had to hear what I was saying. His manner was brusque, his actions rough. And you asked ‘Please let us know what you think’ Now I’m going to let this experience fade. I don’t want, in addition to this, a whole fuss and complaint route. I just needed to say something because others may be saying the same thing. I’m sure this won’t be published but please pass on to Spa Medica in general and Spa Medica in Chapeltown, Sheffield. You can contact me if you wish. Thank you

  4. Review titled Mixed

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Malcolm Kent - Posted on 20 December 2024

Firstly, on the day of the cataract operation I was asked to decide whether I wanted good distance vision or to be short sighted in one eye. This was a total surprise to me as it had not been discussed at pre-op assessment, or by my regular optician. It was not mentioned in the pamphlet posted to me. Such a critical and irreversible decision should not be sprung on someone when their next stop is the operating theatre. As an absolute minimum it should be discussed at pre-op but should really be put to patients early enough to allow someone to really think about it and discuss it with their optician. Secondly, the surgeon was brusque to the point of rudeness. While I had a painfully bright light shining in my eye and someone poking tools around in it he repeatedly, and rather crossly, told me to relax my forehead. This was my third eye operation with three different surgeons and he was the first to complain about tension in the forehead. I would have thought that keeping still was as much as a surgeon could expect. The outcome of the operation was good and I believe I made the right decision on the lens but there are improvements to be made.

  6. Review titled A difficult experience

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Ann Whitaker - Posted on 09 December 2024

Virtually all the staff were friendly, caring and professional. However, the surgeon was rather brusque in his manner, when I was on the operating table, instead of asking me to move my head or bring my chin up, he did it in a very rough way. It was like he was in a great hurry to get the procedure finished. Before the surgery I advised the surgeon that I was feeling really nervous and anxious, he brushed that off and clearly didn't pass that information to the nurses in the theatre, so I was not offered any support or reassurances.

A very pleasant experience under the circumstances. The staff from the front door onwards were all extremely professional, helpful and nothing was to much trouble.

From start to finish (which was less than a month in total) the whole experience has been speedy, smooth, friendly and efficient. From the man who greeted us at the entrance through the admin staff to the nurses and theatre staff, everyone was pleasant, helpful, informative and supportive. I cannot recommend you highly enough.
