My father aged 91 was bereaved a week ago. He has many needs and yet cannot get an appointment via telephone or a home visit as nobody answers calls anymore. I would have thought a caring practice would at least enquire as to how he was ,coping with cancer, failing heart , pre diabetes and indwelling catheter. To have to get himself to A and E because district nurses had been out already and then be subjected to four hours at hospital is distressing. I appreciate the system is struggling but having visited last week with both parents, prior to mums death that evening, there was little activity . I worked for 34 years in the NHS as a dentist and patient care was a vocation and the elderly especially were afforded both respect and time. Sadly I feel your priorities and systems leave a lot to be desired. Both NHS England and the CQC are there to provide a challenge to standards but as I well appreciate from my practicing days there must be a balance. Box ticking is not patient care as it should be. I am frustrated that my surviving parent cannot access even a review of medication or treatment needs at the least at the surgery but ideally via a home visit.
