I had been experiencing painful sex for a few months when I went to see my gp. last August. I knew they were understaffed, and I had already tried a pharmacy for treatment, and even when I explained this, I was repeatedly fobbed off by Albion with excuses like 'It's just condoms' and made to feel like I was wasting their time for practicing safe sex. I attempted multiple times to get an appointment, recieved telephone appointments (some of which never came) with a practitioner and a locum, both of whom were unwilling to believe anything I said. I tried at home treatments, spent hours on Google. Felt like I was going mad because no one would take me seriously. For the Entire month of December they refused to see any new patients and essentially told me to go to a g.u.m. clinic who could only confirm what I already knew--I didn't have an s.t.i. The Only face to face I was ever granted was for testing after I specifically asked for it, and at this point, I found the first nurse who actually believed me and suggested I might have a skin thinning problem. But their tests found an infection, and they decided to plug me on antibiotics (which fixed nothing) and that skin-thinning diagnosis was never mentioned again. After eight months of trying to get them to believe me, I gave up. My mental health was in tatters, I was convinced I was wasting the doctors' time (because they rarely ever let me talk to one) and I resigned myself to just never having sex again which had a huge impact on my marriage. If a man had come in for the same problem, perhaps they would've cared? Then we moved house and signed up to a new practice. I was talked into getting an appointment by a friend. It only took the new doctor one appointment/examination to diagnose me with lichensclerosis and it was obvious parts of my skin had Fused Together. If left untreated it could've developed into a pre-cancerous version. I was so relieved that I wasn't 'making it up' I burst into tears. I must exempt that one nurse who suggested the thinning skin from the scathingness of this review, but even they could have suggested that theory to the rest of the team. Albion/College Road is truly appalling and relies on econsult and telephone appointments too much, and that's reflected in the hostility of the reception area (where the tension from angry patients yelling literally left me shaking--my sympathy to the staff). I have been left with ridiculous amounts of anxiety at the thought of going to a gp for my health. My husband was so good throughout it all, but he shouldn't have had to be. Now I can only thank God that I am finally being referred to a gynecologist (on an 11 Month waiting list that I could've been on over a year ago if they were willing to actually listen to me). They have a Facebook group for patients that is literally dedicated to people trying to swap strategies just to see their doctor. Avoid this place like the plague.
