Review titled Not a good experience
Rated 2 stars out of 5

My appointment for minor surgery was cancelled three times and rescheduled, the final time it was 45 minutes before the appointment was due. This is not acceptable for many reasons but not least because of the anxiety build up of such a procedure and also the impact on my work in having to cancel and rearrange my diary. Once at the surgery, I waited over 2hrs for my appointment to even commence. Whilst this was annoying in itself, my biggest frustration was with the lack of communication from the reception staff about the wait. There was zero communication at check in, and then everyone was just left to sit and wait with no update - everyone was getting agitated. A half hourly update should have been given to the waiting room as a minimum! Also, if people are expected to be waiting this long (which on talking to other people in the waiting room is a regular occurrence) comfort facilities should be provided. As a minimum a water fountain, preferably a tea / coffee machine. I realise there are shops in the area but not everyone will have brought money and the lack of communication meant no one dares to leave the building incase they get called and miss their turn. The procedure itself went well and this part of the service I have no issue with. Although, again, the waiting area in the upstairs surgical area is devoid of any comfort facilities and you are very much stuck up there with no access information. I think the service overall has been poor and there are some simple steps to improvement, the main one being better communication about wait times and making the wait more comfortable.

The practice just gets worse year on year. They cancel appointments the evening before its due and text you to let you know. If you don't see the text message its tough ?. Do these people realise that we don't all bury out heads in our phones or sleep with them. They book a telephone appointment for a meds review then they dont ring you and put on your NHS record that you failed to attend. Where did I fail to attend? its shocking. The woman on the desk spends too long chatting to patients and dosnt seem to know how to get to the point and move on. I know this because I can hear the conversation 4 yards back, she also passes on medical advise which I have also heard and cringe at. That side of the building is constantly devoid of activity most of the seats are empty, all you hear is tumble weed yet try and book an appointment its always weeks in advance. Lakeside practice however is thriving its always busy. my doctor (the one thats there all the time) is the glue that holds Askern medical practice together without him there would be no patients. He's a gentleman and a fine Doctor. But don't refer to the big cheese as a Doctor he told my wife "I'm not a doctor I'm a surgeon and Ive held someones heart in my hand". Big deal ...... Hows about getting a grip on your practice its a joke

Dear Patient, Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback to the surgery following your recent experience. We only cancel appointments as a very last resort, this maybe on occasions when staff are unwell, other than that we do try to accommodate patients on every occasion. Care Navigators only provide advice which they are competent in providing following intense training upon induction. It may be that not all seats are occupied at all times, clinicians do complete telephone calls as well as face to face appointments during their sessions. I would be happy to discuss this in more detail if you can contact 01709 514443. Thank you

Review titled Somebody please answer the telephones
Rated 1 star out of 5

Everytime I call in the afternoon I am immediately told there are more than 5 people ahead of me in the queue. Is that 6 or 60? The figure does not drop no matter how long you are on the line. The last time I waited over an hour before hanging up. Today I simply gave up when I heard the "more than 5 bit" if it covers all those surgeries have independent phone lines. And Ive been in the surgery at Askern whilst ringing the phone and one person is on the desk, nobody in the office area and no phone ringing. What is happening? please answer the phone, employ more people, and be more open and honest about these problems.

Dear Patient, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback following your experience at Askern Medical Practice. We have recently changed our telephone protocol offering a call back service to all patients. Although you are registered at Askern Medical Practice, calls are picked up across at our branch site in Mexborough, therefore although it seems reception arent answering phones we do have dedicated Care Advisors taking your calls throughout the day. If you would like to discuss this further please contact 01709 514443.

booking for appointment is literally impossible. minimum an hour of waiting. reception staff extremely unhelpful and unfriendly. it is definitely not recommended. I should have registered in the next door desk Lakeside Practice in the first place.

Dear Frank, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding Askern Medical Practice. Apologies for the delay in responding to your comments, we are undergoing a new management structure to ensure this does not happen in the future. Review titled Awful service
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Ruby Diskin - Posted on 27 March 2023
Got given a telephone appointment at this practice by the call centre staff who said there was no face to face appointments available so I awaited my phone call. Appointment time passed but as it said telephone appointment times are approximate I wasn’t too concerned. I then received a text saying I had not attended my appointment. To my confusion I rang the practice who said they don’t even do telephone appointments and the appointment was put down as a face to face!! Absolutely fuming about this. Been laid up in bed with suspected strep A and there is nothing they can do until tomorrow!! I will be making a formal complaint about the whole group practice as I needed some medication today! Diabolical service from the call centre staff who are clearly incompetent in arranging an appointment.

Dear Mrs Diskin, Thank you for providing some feedback following your recent experience at Askern Medical Practice / Mexborough Medical Practice. I am sorry for the delay in responding, this is due to a change in management and IT issues, which is now resolved. We have provided additional training with our reception team, with regards to these sort of issues so hopefully this should not happen again. If you would like to discuss this further please telephone 01709 514443 and either myself or another member of the management team will be happy to speak with you. Regards, Vicky Jacques (Practice Director)
