Review titled Mixed experience and feelings about this practice
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by WTAlly - Posted on 07 January 2025
After careful consideration, I have decided to write this review to share my experience. I hope it will assist other residents in finding a suitable GP practice. The nurses deserve 5 stars; they are excellent. Admin staff deserve 5 stars for their helpfulness. Pharmacists, I'd rate 2.5 stars. They've denied prescriptions without informing me, leaving me to find out at the pharmacy. For example, after surgery this year, I needed follow-up painkillers, but the GP only gave me a two-week supply each month. I've also had partially filled repeats with no explanation and recently, they prescribed the wrong item but blamed me, despite having written proof. Medical staff? I was scheduled to see a doctor about a matter that the physiotherapist had written to the GP about. It took several weeks to get an appointment. When I arrived, the lady thought I had come for test results. It appears she was not a doctor because when I explained the problem, she mentioned needing to consult a doctor and get back to me. Today, appointments can no longer be made by telephoning or visiting the surgery. Patients must now submit an online form detailing their problem and specifying what they require from the doctor. These email messages are then reviewed to determine whether or when a patient can see a doctor. This process is impersonal. While conditions like "flu" or "belly pains" might be straightforward, other issues are not. Sharing very personal medical problems with an anonymous person at the other end of the computer might be uncomfortable for some. In the few years I have been registered at this surgery, I have had to resort to going to A&E, walk-in centres, and a private GP. On one occasion when I had to go to a private GP, the surgery did not accept his findings – even though he is a consultant and specialist in the field at Northern General. I had to go through a longwinded process that took several weeks. That’s my experience which I hope can help inform the decision of others who are looking for a surgery.

This GP practice is at its worst. My 14-year-old daughter has been seriously let down by their service on three separate occasions. Most recently, she was repeatedly denied a prescription until she completely ran out, and now it's the weekend. Despite seven phone calls and two in-person visits, we still haven't received it. Earlier this year, my daughter developed a rash covering the top half of her body, which worsened over the first few days. I called every day for an appointment but was told there was a three-week wait and advised to go to A&E if it was an emergency. It wasn’t an emergency, but it clearly needed attention. The practice’s website claims routine appointments are available within 48 hours and that children are seen the same day, but we were forced to wait three weeks. By the time we finally saw a doctor, the rash had faded, and the doctor said he needed to see it when it was active. When I asked how he could see it when you can’t get an appointment, he had no response. The waiting room is always empty when I visit, yet securing an appointment is nearly impossible. The receptionists are rude and dismissive, only trying to get you off the phone as quickly as possible. I’ve tried transferring to another surgery, but because we are technically out of the area, other practices won’t take us. This practice is heading toward a serious incident unless something is done.

Review titled Could there be a worse experience?
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Geoff G - Posted on 15 May 2023
Where do I start, disgraceful “service”. Now told a call back from a doctor is over 4 weeks !!. That’s not to actually see a doctor, just a telephone call. A request for medication, which I urgently needed still awaiting a signature four days later. There seems to be a total disregard for treating people in a professional & timely manner. My whole experience with dealing with NHS services is not fit for purpose. What is happening that this once great service has declined so far ??

Dear Geoff, Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you feel you have not received the care you expected, I can understand the frustration in your review. We offer same day urgent appointments at both our site and local hubs, and our receptionists are trained to care navigate patients to the most appropriate service to meet their needs. Routine appointments are available within a longer timescale. I appreciate this frustration and it is something we are working on. All urgent prescription requests made via our urgent process are dealt with the same day, and 48 hours for routine requests. Sometimes there are reasons identified that may mean this is not possible and without knowing the specifics of your review it is very difficult to address the exact cause of your delay. I would like to reiterate that we have patient care and wellbeing at the forefront of our vision of providing high quality healthcare, and apologise if you feel we fell short in this instance. I am happy to discuss your review with you directly, if you want to contact me at the practice on 01709828806. Thank you Spencer Oates Practice Manager

Review titled Appalling practice

I have been treated over the last year for thyroid problems which are not yet resolved. I was taken off all medication last November and asked to have a repeat blood test in 3 months. I had the tests yesterday and the have checked my results on NHS app and was advised to contact my GP due to abnormal results. On calling the surgery I was offered a routine phone appointment on 31/3/2023 which is 4 weeks away. How does the receptionist know that my condition is routine??Bearing in mind that the surgery have not contacted me over the results, I have contacted them. I also have a chronic skin condition and have recently had a flare up and required medication. I was informed that I have to see a doctor before the medication can be prescribed, yet again another 4 weeks. I do not have the time to ring at 8.00am or 1.00pm for an 'emergency' appointment as I work full time and my problems are not emergencies, 4 weeks for a routine phone appointment is absolutely ridiculous and the treatment is required now, I have therefore purchased it from an online pharmacy who offered me a consultation within an hour. The way that patients are treated at this surgery is shambolic to say the least.

Dear patient, thank you for your feedback. I understand from your comment that you are not happy with having to wait 4 weeks for a routine appointment. I appreciate that this can be frustrating and please be assured that should the GP have felt that you needed to be seen sooner they would have contacted you and organised this themselves. We are always striving to provide high quality patient care including improved access. There are GP/ANP and HCA services available at a local hub which our reception team are able to book into. These are very often within a few days. It is very difficult to comment on the specifics of this individual case as you have posted anonymously. If you would like to discuss this in more depth please do not hesitate to contact the surgery on 01709828806 and I would be more than willing to assist you. Thank you again for your feedback.
