Review titled Time to care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 07 December 2022
Having suffered severe acute pain for over two weeks, inability to sleep and fear that my pain would be too great for my prescribed medication I sent a plea for support and assistance to the surgery via Ask My GP. I was offered an appointment later that day. As I waited to see the doctor I feared my appointment may be a waste of time, that nothing more could be done. The doctor invited me to sit down and asked about the history of my pain - not what had prompted my message that morning but rather 'Go back to the beginning and tell me what has been going on.' He listened, real, obvious active listening. He demonstrated on the skeleton hanging in his office the potential causes of my pain; he examined me and explained how things may progress. In particular he described all the ways in which various medications work to relieve pain, how these can be layered to achieve the best possible relief. He mitigated the concern I had developed from reading, as one is instructed to do, all the patient information leaflets that came with each medicine, warning of addiction and risk of using for more than a few days. He ensured I was aware of the purpose of each medicine and when was the optimum time to use it. He offered me an additional medicine, not that I was 'required' to take but that I could have available in case I had another night when nothing seemed to have worked. He gave me his time and attention for at least 20 minutes. I left the surgery feeling reassured, that I would not be abandoned to struggle with uncontrollable pain. Since then I have not had any incidents of awful pain, I have taken medication as advised, I have followed the exercises a physio recommended gently, but without feeling I was failing if I could not do each one energetically several times a day; and I have benefited from two nights of sleep, not 8 hours straight, but good pain-free sleep and am feeling so much better for that. I do not know what any GP has to do to justify, to managers and statisticians, spending at least twice an allotted appointment time with one patient but I am extremely grateful that one GP at Chapelthorpe Medical Centre was willing to do so. As a result I expect I may be able to self manage until I recover, I certainly feel equipped and empowered to do so. The question I would like to pose to NHS England and everyone trying to run the NHS under pressure is Can a value be placed upon time to care? Might investing 20 minutes in real caring actually achieve greater benefit that 10 lots of 2 minute uses of NHS online, 111, one line answers, and 'a prescription has been sent to the chemist'. I felt guilty for even having a face to face appointment, but I now do not doubt it represented real value. Thank you.

I had my first smear test at the surgery after admittedly putting it off for a while, the nurse was super reassuring and talked me through everything. The procedure was very quick and painless, and I was made to feel comfortable throughout

Amongst other concerns, already shared with the practice, I waited all day today for the Doctor to ring as arranged via an appointment they offered. It’s now 22.05 and I’m still waiting. I was discharged from hospital only last week. I needed to talk to the GP about serious health issues diagnosed. I was offered an appointment and it didn’t happen. We even checked after lunch and were assured the GP would call me.
