Review titled Not helpful and near impossible to get an appointment
Rated 1 star out of 5

Its always difficult to get seen at this GP, I rang at 8:15 (when they open) multiple mornings and couldn't get in. Was told to use the Patches online service instead but new requests were unavailable on this also. I only got an appointment through a 111 recommendation. I went in for a personal feminine issue and was given a male doctor, which I did not mind, but he seemed uncomfortable, awkward even, discussing issues of a personal matter with me. And then he told me to collect some sample test kits from the reception that I had to return. No clear information on what I needed to get or what I needed to do, I had to question him on what to do and where to return them - it was just assumed I had done this before and knew what to do but I didn't and I was nervous. Luckily a nice female nurse helped me once I was in the reception, but I would have rather received the full thorough information in the first place. And then not until getting home have I realised the samples do not even provide instructions for how to collect samples, so I have had to find instructions online. The nurse that carried out my smear was lovely, very sweet and helpful and treat me like a person, but I feel like the GP did not provide care in a way that felt I had been fully listened to.

Dear Patient, I apologise for the delay in replying and am sorry you have been finding it difficult to get through to the surgery. You are probably aware that most routine appointments in hospitals had been delayed or even cancelled during the pandemic. As a result of this, there are now significant backlogs in waiting lists and the knock-on result is that there are more unwell patients who now need to be seen by their GP practice which more often results in more calls to the surgery. This has placed greater demand on our services. As a practice we have tried to address this issue. In March 2024 we introduced a new telephone system to improve patient experience when calling the surgery. The new system allows patients to request a call back from the receptionist. This means patients do not have to wait in the telephone queue, instead, patients retain their place in the queue, when the patient reaches position number one they receive a call back from the practice. In conjunction with this we also extended our queue limit, to prevent patients from continuously redialling. Currently we are looking to introduce a new appointments system. The new system will ensure requests for appointments will be reviewed by a doctor to determine whether the medical problem is urgent or routine and to ensure each patient is seen by the most appropriate health professional. With regards to your concerns regarding a consultation with one of our doctors, if you could provide more details, for example the doctor seen and the date seen I can investigate this further. You can email me at Shaftesbury.churchview@nhs.net. I was glad to hear you received help from one of our nurses and that the nurse who did a recent smear for you was lovely and very sweet. As a practice we do our best to provide the best possible care for all our patients and I am sorry we fell short of this. I thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback and hope I have managed to reassure you that our appointments system is something we are invested in improving as a practice. Please be assured we are always looking for innovative ways to improve our systems and would welcome any suggestions you may have. Julie Sutcliffe Practice Manager
