  1. Review titled Not as good as it was. Frustrating

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Christina Hartmann - Posted on 29 October 2024

This surgery was great at the beginning but now, the lack of service is frustrating. There never seems to be any appointments available on the MyGP app unless it's non urgent or you need a jab for flu or COVID and only one doctor available, it seems. So it's pointless as you'll have to ring them anyway. (Only good thing is that the receptionist is lovely and helpful.) No telephone appointments available to book through the system anymore, as Doctors want to see you face to face, which I keep having to explain, I struggle with at the moment. They have now got this system where you have to fill out a lengthy request form online and then wait for someone to ring you, to book you an appointment. This is also if you want to extend your fit note, which btw the lady got wrong 3 times and had to ring me back 3 times to rebook. This system is ridiculous and a waste of Dr. appointments, just to extend a fit note. I had no choice but to grab a double appointment (on the 4th call), in order to have my fit note extended and for my menopause symptoms to be dealt with, at the same time (here's hoping) with a male doctor. Only doctor available in this practice at the moment it seems, even though I would have been more comfortable speaking to a female doctor. Unfortunately there was non available until the end of November. I can't wait that long!!! I have now been waiting since June to be put on HRT and have been off work for 5 weeks, due to my symptoms. (Anxiety and low moods, mainly) This messing and waiting around to get something done, (other than a quick fix of antidepressants) is really not helping. I'm beginning to think, that joining this surgery was a big mistake.

Dear Ms Hartmann, Sorry to hear of your frustrations and the negative feedback given. I will try to respond to some of your concerns below. In terms of waiting times for routine appointments the practice has experienced an increase in waiting times. There are many reasons for this. 1 large reason is that the number of patients we serve has increased significantly in the last 1-2 years despite a reduction in funding. We have taken on nearly 300 new patients such as yourself in the last 12 months. Funding to practices has steadily fallen in recent years and we are struggling. More info on this is here https://www.bma.org.uk/our-campaigns/gp-campaigns/patients/gps-are-on-your-side Additionally, I (Dr Goldrick) have been away from the practice for the last 5 months receiving complicated medical treatment. Whilst the practice has filled my shoes to the best of its ability - I am hoping to return to the coal face in the next few weeks and start chipping away at the increased waiting times. In terms of the myGP app – we intentionally do not add all our appointments to the online app. When we have done this in the past appointments have been abused and inappropriately booked by people trying to manipulate the system. Any appointments that need some sort of filtering or triaging by our team do not appear on the app therefore. You will only see appointments that are considered routine therefore. The myGP app has some extra time frame restrictions compared to other apps and you might want to explore the other apps (e.g. the NHS app). You mention difficulty booking a routine telephone appointment. The practice recently changed the proportion of appointments it offers in favour of more routine face to face appointments compared to telephone. We are due to review this change very soon and your feedback will help us going forward. In relation to the HRT you mention we understand your frustration and indeed we share it. However I understand you have been informed of the reasons for the delay in prescribing you HRT and this reason is fully outside of the control of the practice. Due to confidentiality rules I cannot expand further here but if you are not clear on the reasons then either discuss this at your next appointment or drop me in a note for my attention and I will call you to explain the reasons. In relation to fit notes – we ask all patients to fill in our online form when requesting a fit note or an extension. These are then reviewed and depending on the circumstances we often ask for a further consultation to take place. Fit notes are legal documents to the DWP and we must ensure that an accurate and up to date assessment of your fitness to work takes place. We accept that things are not ideal but you might find that every practice is struggling at the moment. Our latest independent feedback is available here and it allows you to compare us at both a national and local level. https://www.gp-patient.co.uk/

  2. Review titled Things changing

Rated 4 stars out of 5

My last two appointments have not been good as I felt that the GP concerned wasn't interested and that I was wasting his time. If someone comes in with a lesion they do expect it to be properly examined with a magnifier not just dismissed. A clinic letter still not being actioned 7 days after receipt and two phone calls asking what is happening which I can't believe. No-one communicates with the patient if there is a problem which would courteous surely. It has never been this bad, clinic letters have always been dealt with promptly and not needed chasing up so I'm not sure what is going on. This is not good patient care.

Firstly, I want to apologise for taking so long to respond to this review. I (Dr Goldrick) look out for these and try to respond promptly. As this is an external website from our practice, we do not need to reply but we do try to generally. Unfortunately, I have been off on extended sick leave and monitoring this site was one of my duties. Interestingly when you visited in June was when my unexpected illness came about and the practice was short staffed at very little notice. It may be therefore that some of your issues were a reflection of this. Whilst the practice was able to source longer term cover for me it is always hard for any small organisation when a key member of staff is unexpectedly missing. We are a small practice – smaller than the NHS average by several thousand patients. With this comes advantages and disadvantages. By being smaller we hope to make it more likely you have met our clinicians and reception team before and we can foster good long-term relationships. Whilst it has been several months now, we are of course still willing to look into your exact circumstances and if you wish to drop me in your personal details, I can investigate the issues you raise in detail. You mention a skin lesion not being examined using a magnifier. Whilst some GPs do have extra training to use a magnifying device called a dermatoscope this is not routine practice and nearly all GPs would examine a skin lesion just with the naked eye. Usually, we can provide instant reassurance as most skin lesions are innocent but if we cannot then we have other options such as observation over time or referral to a dermatologist. I am sorry you were not fully reassured at your appointment and I do hope your skin issue is now settled. You also expressed concern that a clinic letter was not actioned within 7 days. The practice receives hundreds of letters and emails a day from outside departments. We do of course have systems to prioritise the important ones and would generally aspire to tackle routine letters within 7 days of receipt but at times we may not achieve this. The staffing issues above may have affected this. If you can provide me with your specific details I can audit exactly when the letter was received and the exact timings of how it filtered through our IT systems and was viewed and actioned by a clinician. Trying to end on a positive note I would like to highlight our independent patient survey results for 2024. This is a national independent survey of patients across England. We scored extremely favourably with 91% describing the overall experience as good. Nationally it was 74%. The results in detail can be found here https://www.gp-patient.co.uk/patientexperiences?practicecode=P82607 As well of being well thought of by patients, it is important to us that we perform well clinically and the results of the 23/24 Quality Outcomes Framework show us to be performing very well clinically too. https://qof.digital.nhs.uk/search/index.asp

  3. Review titled First Rate Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was recently treated and referred to hospital by my GP. This was done in a very professional way and I felt at ease throughout the consultation with my GP. We are now waiting for the results of the treatment from my hospital visit. Overall the treatment from the GPs, nurses and reception staff at Crompton View Surgery has been outstanding.

  4. Review titled Great and helpful staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Brian Grundy - Posted on 10 May 2024

I presume that when things go wrong when dealing with companies, customers are all too eager to complain. Rarely do they bring it to the attention of managers when things go right. Well on this occasion I felt a compulsion to point out how pleased I have been in dealing with one of your staff at Crompton View surgery. Helen assisted my daughter and my grandaughter recently in organising some jabs for the prevention of Rabies. Helen was extremely helpful; therefore, I would like to bring to your attention that Helen is an extremely polite and professional person and went that extra mile to help me. I am not very good at putting into words my pleasure in dealing with people, but I just wish all the company's staff I dealt with were a little like Helen.

  5. Review titled Long wait times for phone to be answered

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Caroline Morrell - Posted on 10 October 2023

I had an appointment for my flu jab this morning which at short notice I was unable to attend. Tried for over an hour to get through and gave up, so am now a did not attend. First time I held for appointments and waited over 6 minutes, then it was option 2 which just rang out so gave up after another 6 minutes being patient 1. I couldn't cancel this appointment online either or would have. Just tried again and option 2 is on answer machine which it wasn't earlier in the morning. Tried for appointments again and waited 7 minutes without progressing up the queue from position 2. It seems that the new system is resulting in longer wait times for phones to be answered and this will mean appointments that people want to cancel get wasted because they like me give up. It might be worth trying to find out why people haven't attended appointments as several will be they gave up the same as hospital systems. I don't feel the new phone system is an improvement with such long wait times to get the phone answered. Can anything be done as this is isolating patients and to be honest it is wasting valuable clinician time that other people could have? I am sure I am not alone with this comment.

  6. Review titled Amazing staff and service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Bernard Payne - Posted on 21 July 2023

I moved to this practice 6 months ago. All the staff without exception including support staff, nurses and doctors are friendly, polite and leave you feeling that everyone cares about your health and you as a person. The staff prioritise your requirements accurately and I have never had an appointment cancelled or deferred. My wife and I both feel we are blessed to have such a professional practice. Thank you to all the staff at Crompton View. We really appreciate all the effort you all put in.

Mr Evans - Thank you as always for your kind feedback! If anyone is interested in seeing how we did in the newly released national GP patient survey the results are available here; https://gp-patient.co.uk/patientexperiences?practicecode=P82607 Overall we did very well. We could have done better on the 'answering the phones' question but we have earlier this year installed a new system which should improve patients experience on the phone. We had been held up by external organisations from making this change earlier. Dr Goldrick and the team
