  1. Review titled Very Disappointing Care level at this practice

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 31 October 2024

We have been patients at this surgery for over 20 years and have received professional and efficient care from many of the doctors with whom we built a trusting relationship over the years. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. There are 7 doctors working at this practice but several of them seem now to work part-time with the result that it is almost impossible to see a doctor. This is not to detract from the sometimes excellent care dispensed by the Nurse Practitioners who do their best with a very busy list delegated to them by the GPs. Our experience recently is that by 8.05 all appointments for the day have already been taken, both in person and on the phone. It used to be the case that if one went down the surgery in person and queued outside with an ill relative, the patient would definitely be seen that morning. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. All appointments for the day have been allocated by 8.05. My partner was only able to obtain a call by the Nurse Practitioner between 2-5 pm, despite the fact that he was seriously ill and 60 years of age and has been unwell for a week. The Nurse Practitioner had not called back by 4.45 pm so he rang to check whether there would be a call. He was told that the surgery was very busy and there was no guarantee that he would get a call that day. The nurse practitioner did call back after 5 pm and was professional. Unfortunately since she called so late, my husband was not then able to collect the prescription for the antibiotics prescribed before the Chemist closed that day. When we inquired if this was the usual level of service now, we were told that one doctor was on annual leave and that there were three GPs working that day out of a total of seven. It seems unsatisfactory that if the surgery is very busy, one of the part-time doctors is not put on call to help cover and do some overtime. The inflexibility of this situation is not at all patient focused. In addition trying to book ahead is also impossible at this surgery (ie. for a couple of days time) if you are actually ill - appointments are only bookable ahead 2 weeks in advance. This is no use to an ill person. While I have felt secure with this practice for many years, I cannot now recommend it to anyone. I am not encouraged and will be looking at other GP options.

Dear Patient, I am very sorry that we were unable to offer your husband an appointment early enough in the day for him to be seen at the surgery before travelling out of London. I am pleased that he was able to speak to our advanced nurse practitioner in the afternoon and I hope that he is starting to feel better with the medication prescribed. We have recently increased the number of appointments that the surgery offers by 12% as the number of registered patients has increased, unfortunately we do still have some very busy days when there is high demand for our face-to-face appointments. The total number of appointments that we can schedule is constrained by the funding that is available from NHS England. I would be happy to meet with you or your husband to further discuss the concerns that you have raised. Yours Edward Drake Practice Manager

Cannot recommend Elm Lodge highly enough. First rate GP surgery. From reception staff, practice nurses to the doctors. Can always get an appointment. Friendly and caring. I'm so glad we switched to them several years ago. Highly recommend.

What can I say about the doctors, nurses, receptionists and office staff? They are all extremely hard working, caring, compassionate. I am truly blown away by their dedication and professionalism. We as a family are so fortunate to have what must be, the best practice in London. A big, big thank you to all in Elm Lodge Surgery for your dedication!
