Very difficult to arrange an appointment or get through in the morning. Now that everything has to go through the reception phone line it’s become much harder for those of us who have other commitments (e.g. commuting, childcare or just being at work) to get through and arrange to see a GP or nurse. I understand that the practice ‘is fully compliant with NHS guidelines’ (as somewhat sniffily said by one of the reception staff), but this doesn’t make it any easier for those of us who lack the time and availability to call at 8am, then wait up to 45 minutes for the call to be connected. If the practice were serious about providing a good service they would consider other options (e.g. online bookings) for those of us who simply cannot afford to spend this length of time on the phone at that time of day, or indeed during office hours. There seems to be no plan to do so, however. I’ve been told that the reason for stopping the online appointment service was that people did not turn up to their appointments. That might be so, but is it fair to penalise the rest of us because of the actions of some people who unfairly don’t turn up? A better approach might be to insist that repeat offenders can only book an appointment by phone. There are plenty of us who would never fail to turn up to an appointment and who would really benefit from the flexibility an online booking service provides. I think the practice is good overall in terms of the professionalism of all the staff. The doctors and nurses are conscientious and mostly very good at what they do. I usually feel like my health is in safe hands. The receptionists and practice managers work very hard to manage the practice and deal with the workload. However, it seems to be slipping backwards in terms of accessibility and ease of use.
