Review titled Impossible to get an appointment
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Daniel Vazquez - Posted on 20 June 2023
When we were first added to this practice, we quickly learnt that if you wanted an appointment, you had to phone at exactly 8am, wait in a queue for half an hour, and you would probably get an appointment on the day. If you phoned at 8.05, however, you would almost certainly not get an appointment. That was bad enough, but nowadays when you phone at 8am, you don't get through. At first I thought this might be an occassional occurence, but this is now the fourth or fifth time I've phoned at exactly 8am and not even been able to join the queue. So I phoned at 10am, got put into a queue, and selected the callback option. At almost 1pm, I still hadn't got a callback, and so I phoned again. After waiting for 20 minutes, I finally spoke to somebody who, of course, couldn't give me an appointment on the day. Instead, they gave me an appointment in five days time. Which is better than nothing, I suppose, but it means I'm thinking of going to A&E, overburdening my already overburdened local hospital.

Dear patient, Thank you for your review, we value your feedback and aim to do our best to improve our services. Since your review we have also hired more admin and clinical staff to meet the demand of both calls and appointments. We would also like to remind you that we offer online consultation on Dr iQ. It has many pathways and a lot of our patients find it an easier option to consult with a clinician.

I tried to ge through the phone to request an appointment for more than 2 hours, from 8am as soon as they open. The system said I am in a queue of more than 30 people , calling at 8:00. How is that possible?

I called on Friday morning waited for 1 hr, finally managed to speak to reception and informed I cannot make advance appointment for continued bleeding as the GP is not open on weekend. Asked to call back Monday and told that when calling Monday, I can make 48hrs advance appointment. Called again at 8am on Monday, waited for 56 minutes, finally someone picked up then hung up. Called again immediately to be put in a queue for a call back, received a call back to be told to call back again tomorrow at 8am. I am afraid this will be a never ending cycle..

Thank you for your valuable feedback Laras. Our GP is open from 8am onward for appointments. We offer 48 hours and 2 weeks in advance appointments for patients, subject to availability. Once we have reached full capacity for appointments, we advise patients to use alternative services such as local pharmacies, NHS 111 and DR IQ. Since your review we have also hired more admin and clinical staff to meet the demand of both calls and appointments.

1) Appointment Booking (1/2) - you have to call every day exactly at 8am to be put in a queue of over 30 callers, stay on the line for 45 minutes and once you get your turn, all the slots are most likely to have been taken up. 2) (2/2) - if you are not given an appointment slot, you have to repeat the same process again the following day (so again, call at 8am to be placed in a queue of 30+ callers) because they offer same day appointment service only. They won't offer an appointment the following day. 3) Reception - the staff appear incapable of handling anything but a routine simple query. Once you bring up something they don't seem to handle regularly, it's a very much "computer says no" response and you end up brainstorming solutions on their behalf. 4) Appointment itself - the vast majority of appointments are handled by nurses (unless you specifically request). In my experience, my issue was dealt with looking up the issue on the computer, reciting NHS guidance to me (on some occasions, irrelevant to my issue) and from then onwards if I brought up a reason why NHS guidance is not relevant here, it was dealt with "this is what the NHS guidance says". 5) Follow ups - when getting a blood test, I was told that I would not be given a call back if everything was okay. 3 weeks later, I thought I better check and called the reception. Turns out, there was an issue with my blood results, it was just never communicated to me. 6) DrIq App - Somewhat helpful but the consultation slots are allocated very quickly and you are likely to end up doing the same process the following day again (very much like booking through the phone). Acceptance/rejection of your prescriptions are never notified so you might end up going to your pharmacy only to be told that they don't have your prescription. My *routine* prescription was once randomly rejected, I went to the pharmacy to be told they don't have it, I had to call the reception to be referred to the clinician who called me 2 working days later and with no explanation, they just put it through so I had to go pick it up to the pharmacy several days later again.

Dear patient, We appreciate that you have taken the time to leave feedback regarding the service you have received in our surgery. Our goal is to leave patients feeling better and well cared for and it is unfortunate this has not been the case for yourself on this occasion. It is important to us that we receive feedback as this informs us on how and where we can improve our services. We are available for drop in sessions every second Thursday of each month between 11am - 12pm, the next session is on 9th November 2023. Thank you
