Review titled Poor mental health support
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Rachel Jameson-Firman - Posted on 13 July 2024
I had a mental health crisis over some months beginning in April 2023, I had a good experience with one of the GPs to begin with, but my treatment thereafter was very poor, from the reception staff, to the other GPs in general. I was told that I did not need an urgent appointment and that I would be given a routine appointment when one became available (however, no one could tell me when that would be!) I was in extreme distress and both my husband and myself were at our wits end. I eventually called in by chance at The Ellis Centre, was seen by a very kind receptionist who recognised my extreme condition and I was seen the following morning by a Consultant Psychiatrist who was able to commence appropriate treatment and medication. I have since made a full recovery but sadly no thanks to Haxby Group Practice. I have considered changing my GP surgery but thankfully have not needed to attend any further. I feel that as soon as someone presents with mental health issues, including extreme anxiety and depression, everyone just assumes that it is a character flaw. I have however been a health care professional since 1981, I have had mental health struggles over the years, as a consequence of historical trauma, but have always recovered and returned to work each time. Sad to say, the treatment I received is not the kind of care I would wish to give to my patients.

Dear Mrs Jameson-Firman Thank you for sharing your experience in using our GP services. We are sorry that we have not met your expectations in offering you a sooner appointment for your mental health. The appointments are offered based on the assessment of your medical need and priority by the GP on the day in balance with same-day GP appointments and the demand we receive from the other patients. Ultimately, you may be asked to wait. However, a new service has now been introduced for patients with acute mental health concerns, which can be accessed by calling 111 if you require very urgent support. We understand it can be frustrating having to wait, and if your medical symptoms or circumstances change while you wait then we empower you to inform us so we can re-assess your medical priority for a sooner appointment. I am happy that you have now received the treatment you needed and if you still require any medical assistance then please feel free to use this link https://access.klinik.co.uk/contact/haxby-group-scarborough to request a further appointment. Kind Regards Piotr Patient Experience Team
