Review titled very poor practice
Rated 1 star out of 5
by R. Thompson - Posted on 13 September 2024
I phoned the practice to request an emergency pack (anti biotics and steroids, as laid down in her care plan by the doctor and the hospital) to ease my wife's asthma attack, at 13.00hrs. Only to be told, very bluntly, that she could not have them, by a receptionist, the practice manager and a doctor. I tried to explain the urgency of the situation, but they did not care. I was told to phone 111. Which I was forced to do, the call handler, in her words was discussed by the practical manner. The 111 lady said she would send out an ambulance. The ambulance arrived and after an examination of my wife took her to Sunderland Royal Hospital. The 111 service and the ambulance team were fantastic. The staff in the hospital again were 100% in care and compassion. After tests medication and xrays, my wife was dicharged at 21.00hrs, along with the antibiotics and steroids that I asked for from our so called caring Herrington Medical Practice. So the refusal by 'the practice' not only put my wifes life in danger, it is very upsetting to see someone having a asthma attack, but also the cost to the nhs of 8 hours of 111 service time, vital ambulance time and several nusres and the xray department. I cannot see or understand the sence and logic by 'the practice' to refuse the medication I asked for in the first place, in would be very interesting if the nhs asked 'the practice' to pay the cost of this very worring day. I do hope the very uncaring people at Herrington Medical Practice read this and understand that people who ask for help are not stupid and ask for medication that can and does save lives. God forbid but one day their attitude may cast the life of one of their patients. To sum up, 8 hours of pain, stress and suffering for my wife, 8 hours of cost to the NHS, when their services could have been give to other people. Not to mention 8 hours of worry for me. Only to be given at 21.00hrs, them medication that I requested at 13.00 hours. Please use some common sence. Herrington Medical Practice used to be a caring and friendly place you could trust, but now it is all about cost cutting and the 10 minute in and out appointments, with very little care or thought about the people they supposed to care for.

Review titled Disappointed
Rated 1 star out of 5
by J Doughty - Posted on 31 May 2024
Having returned home after a traumatic experience where my 4 year old niece had spent 6 days in Intensive care and a further 4 days in a foreign hospital, and unable to fly for a further week, I rang the surgery to arrange her to see her GP. I knew they were due home the following Sunday, I rang to request an appointment for the Monday. Having spoken to the receptionist and practice manager only to be advised we could not have an appointment until the Wednesday, there was no understanding, empathy or sympathy shown to the situation we as a family found ourselves in. I feel each case should be looked at individually as one rule does not fit all, and as the child had suffered a compound skull fracture question whether the staff understood the severity of the diagnosis.

Review titled Poor front line receptionists
Rated 1 star out of 5

Your reception and phone lines are your first point if contact for your patients. Some of the older ones still there have stinking attitudes acting like they are the doctors. They seriously need a course in manners.. No patient should feel humiliated conversing with a receptionist with a god complex. This surgery has really gone down hill over the years and I have been a patient there for 23. Seriously thinking of moving

Review titled Let me down as a new patient
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Philip smith - Posted on 24 July 2024
After registering twice online it didn't work. I had to call in and fill out a form. I had no confirmation of registration. I had no appointments. Registered with a new doctors 07/24 got asked to go in the same day for a new patient checkup. Had tests, found out I have high blood pressure, diabetes and hi cholesterol. Had a telephone appointment and two lots of blood tests. Booked in with the diabetic nurse. This probably and should have been checked sooner. My new doctors are proactive rather than reactive.

Review titled Lack of appointments, cancellations and concerns
Rated 1 star out of 5

I have been with the practice for over 15 years and the service has become shocking, I have been trying for 3 weeks to get an appointment and when finally got one cancelled with no explanation and told to call up again on next working day. As a working person have to queue on a phone at 8.30 to be told by time you get through no appointments left, only can book econsult online which is no good and then only be able to book a week in advance is ridiculous. Diaries should be bookable at least two weeks in advance so people can get to see a doctor face to face. My clients wouldn’t accept having to call up everyday to arrange an appointment and in the modern day of online diaries it should be easy to show which doctors are working and available to book an appointment with. Reception do try but can’t tell you why cancelled or rearrange so what’s the point of a text message telling you to call and rebook only to be then told to call at 8.30 next working day and again wait in queue. Appointment bookings 100% need looking into

'I am sorry that your experience of booking appointments at the surgery is so difficult. We agree- it’s a problem. We could easily fill all our appointments every day 3 times over. Putting a 2 week ahead system in place simply increases the 'did not attend' rate and blocks the appointment system for longer. We constantly try to review our system to ensure that it is fair and usable by the most vulnerable and in need patients. At Herrington we work tirelessly to ensure we are working at 100% capacity at all times. It may be worth writing to your MP to outline your complaints.'
