  1. Review titled Disgusting Service

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Susan Wood - Posted on 25 October 2022

I have been trying to get an appointment since July. Doctor told me to come back after 6 weeks. Had it changed 4 times spoke to a locum doctor for 15 mins who said they couldn't do anything i need to see my own gp with a face to face appointment. finally got there today On Time to find the check in machine not working had to wait for reception there were 11 people in front of me by the time i got there they said i was late and would have to rebook even though they could see how big the queue was. I was so upset. I know my gp is off and was willing to see another one. The amount of my time and reception and gp time that has been wasted is disgusting. The doctor put me on medication and told me it would need reviewing in 6 weeks i am still taking it not sure if i should be or not? I think i am ok but what if i were not what then. Cant even speak to a practice manager no one will see me.

Dear Susan, thank you for sharing your feedback and for the time taken to discuss this on the phone with our Reception Manager. We are sincerely sorry for your rescheduled appointment. As explained, unfortunately, staff illness is often shared with the Practice on the day. Where possible, the team will try and rearrange these for the earliest possible next appointment and inform the patient of the change. If this isn't possible, we inform the patient, apologise and ask that they get in touch to rearrange this with us. In addition, unfortunately the self-check in machine will not allow a patient to check in if they are doing so on or after their appointment time. We are sorry that further delay was experienced due to queue size at our main reception desk at the time of your arrival. On occasions like this, additional staff are deployed to the main desk to support patient enquiries. Thank you for your feedback and the opportunity to learn from it and share further information with you.

  2. Review titled Shocking appointment system

Rated 1 star out of 5

I spent almost an hour trying to speak to a receptionist to make an urgent Doctor's as I wished to speak the Doctor on the phone. For 50 minutes of this wait I was number 1 in the queue so I decided to use my mobile to try : I was waiting 20 minutes on this phone (still unacceptable), but the second phone was answered before the first call made. How can this be other than the original call was being ignored. When I did speak to someone, she was very pleasant and did not know how that could have happened, however, I was unable to get an appointment to speak to the doctor on the telephone (not a face to face appointment) until 31 October 2022...5 weeks. How is this acceptable? I explained that it was an urgent call to discuss the aftercare of my 88 year old Father who is in hospital after his operation went wrong. Considering it is the largest medical practice in the country it's systems are ineffective and not fit for purpose.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We would like to apologise for your experience when contacting the Practice. In March 2022 we upgraded our phone system to include a call back option for patients to utilise. This system holds the queue position and returns the call the patient when they reach the first position. Based on the information shared in your review, we are unable to explain your experience. Please get in touch with us at medicalsecretaries@nhs.net to confirm the date and time of your call and the phone numbers used to call us. This information will enable the phone providers to isolate your call and look for technical faults. It is essential that they have this information to be able to learn from the experience and implement improvements going forward. In addition, we are also aware that some patients may still be trying to contact the Practice using previously shared suite phone numbers. These numbers have changed over the years, and we would always advised patients to contact us via the main phone number or engage consult to ensure they reach the team for assistance. Finally, we were sorry to read of a delay in available face to face appointments. We continue to experience high volumes of staff illness alongside clinical vacancies. We continue to focus on recruitment into clinical roles and have employed additional locum GP cover to support patients at this time. We would like to apologise for your experiences on this occasion but hope this response has helped to explain the circumstances.

Dear Mr Smith We are sincerely sorry for the delay in you accessing a routine appointment with your GP. Our aim is to enable patients to see their GP for routine concerns within two weeks. Unfortunately, staff absence due to Covid-19 illness and existing clinical vacancies are having an impact on appointments. We are working hard to resolve this and meet the current demand with ongoing recruitment.

  5. Review titled Shocking

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I contacted the secretaries to have a mandatory form signed in order to allow me to be able to fly on an airplane with my EpiPen's, and was informed that I would be charged. I was being charged for having severe anaphylaxis, a condition I can't control and with it being idiopathic anaphylaxis... it's a condition I can't avoid the causes for either. I understand having to charge patients for certain things, but when it is something they need that is completely unavoidable... then I think that it's unexpectable. I have to pay £17.50 just to be able to carry the needles that can save my life, if I don't pay they I can't fly with them. How ridiculous. I work within the NHS myself and I have never put an ultimatum on someone like this. You will pay us or we are going to sign the vital piece of paper you need. It doesn't matter that it's the medicine that saves your life every month, unless you pay you can't carry it. I mean what a joke. I supplied the GP with the form, I explained the situation. If you speak to my GP or look at my medical history you will know that my anaphylaxis is spiraling and I'm having to have an emergency appointment with the allergy team... so why wouldn't this be covered by the NHS? Why wouldn't it be classed as a precautionary measure to cover the GP's back as he is meant to be controlling my anaphylaxis? I don't mind taking things further when I have multiple anaphylactic reactions abroad and can't control it because I won't have my epi pens. Unfortunately I'm being forced to pay to carry them by my GP... the person who is meant to control my anaphylaxis and keep me stable. Do you see the issue? I sure do.

Thank you for getting in touch regarding your concerns with a recent charge for completing non-NHS work. We are sincerely sorry that you feel disappointed with our service and we would like to address the points you raised in your recent contact. We understand that you are required by your airline to provide a form that is signed by your GP in connection with taking your medication abroad. When you requested this form be completed by your GP you were informed that there was a charge of £17.50 for the GP to complete this non-NHS work. Information regarding charges for non NHS work is available on our website at https://www.lhmp.co.uk/information/non-nhs-fees-charges/ The Government’s contract with GPs covers medical services to NHS patients, including the provision of ongoing medical treatment. In recent years, however, more and more organisations have been involving doctors in a whole range of non-medical work. Sometimes the only reason that GPs are asked is because they are in a position of trust in the community, or because an insurance company or employer wants to ensure that information provided to them is true and accurate. The BMA (British Medical Association) suggest fees for non-NHS work which is not covered under GP’s NHS contract, to help GPs set their own professional fees. With certain limited exceptions, GPs do not have to carry out non-NHS work on behalf of their patients. Whilst GPs will always attempt to assist their patients with the completion of forms, they are not required to do such non-NHS work. Time spent completing forms and preparing reports takes the GP away from the medical care of his or her patients. Most GPs have a very heavy workload and paperwork takes up an increasing amount of their time, so many GPs find they have to complete this work outside of and in addition to their normal hours. When a doctor signs a certificate or completes a report it is a condition of remaining on the Medical Register that they only sign what they know to be true. In order to complete even the simplest of forms therefore, the doctor might have to check the patient’s entire medical record. Carelessness or an inaccurate report can have serious consequences for the doctor with the General Medical Council (the doctors’ regulatory body) or even the police. We hope that this has helped to explain the circumstances in connection with your concern.

  6. Review titled Prompt Treatment For Elderly Mother

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 19 August 2022

My housebound elderly mother who has cancer received the appropriate antibiotic treatment for a wound infection within 2 hours after contacting the very polite and reassuring receptionist. The Duty Doctor rang me half an hour after speaking to the receptionist and I was able to collect the antibiotics soon after from the pharmacist. I could not fault the care given.
