Review titled Not fit for purpose
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Brixham Resident - Posted on 28 October 2023
My recent experiences with Mayfield Medical Center has raised significant concerns, particularly for those who are not persistent in seeking care. While the staff at the center is commendably kind and professional, the severe shortage of doctors has created an alarming situation where timely appointments are scarce. This issue not only causes frustration but also puts patients at risk, especially those who do not persistently pursue medical attention. The heart of the problem lies in the difficulties surrounding contacting the center. The constant busyness of phone lines and a lack of efficient online communication options make it arduous to schedule appointments, seek advice, or address urgent medical concerns. Patients who do not persist in their attempts to reach the center are left with no choice but to endure their health issues in silence, hoping that the problems will resolve on their own. This situation is far from ideal, as it forces patients to suffer in silence. For those who do not persist, their conditions may deteriorate to the point where hospitalization becomes necessary. This not only causes unnecessary suffering but also consumes more of the limited resources of the NHS. Mayfield Medical Center needs urgent improvements to ensure timely and efficient healthcare access. The current state of the practice is clearly not aligned with its intended purpose of providing accessible healthcare to the community. The consequences are dire, as people are suffering in silence, leading to avoidable hospitalizations that strain the already burdened NHS. It is my sincere hope that the management of Mayfield Medical Center will take these concerns seriously and work swiftly to rectify these issues. The well-being and health of the community depend on it. The status quo is not acceptable, and I urge immediate action to address these critical issues.

Doors to this practice are still locked with a reception letting you in if you pass the test, people left waiting outside if only have a query. Why 3yrs on from covid is this still being allowed when the rest of the country is back to normal !!

Review titled totally useless admin system

In light of previous experiences and a review I decided to take my business elsewhere. I was informed that it was probably just the same at other practices. I'm here to say it isn't. The difference between the way I am treated at my new surgery is light years away. Triage in place, Dr rings back (sometimes within 10min), prescription requests done immediately and dispatched to nominated pharmacy within the day, practice pharmacist phoning to discuss treatment options. I am so glad I transferred. It has restored my faith in the GP service. Oh, there are no covid restrictions either!

Review titled Difficult to get medical review
Rated 2 stars out of 5

I rarely review anything but am doing so in the hope that the practise can improve. Didn't phone because online consultation continues to be the system and filled this in on Wednesday. Am concerned about my health. Received a text message same day to say that this had been passed to a Dr for consideration on Thursday. Rechecked the text message this am expecting a call from reception or admin about what Dr would want me to do. Discovered that the date of return call was planned for 6th July. I thought this was a text error so called the surgery to check. Spoke to a really nice receptionist - not her fault and she was lovely, but indeed a two week wait for a telephone call was correct. I am not urgent apparently - not sure how that can be deduced through an online consultation form. The feeling is that it's not important enough. What has happened for this much change in GP service delivery since the outbreak of Covid 19 for patients to need to wait two weeks for a call before treatment is suggested?

Review titled Online Consultation is Badly Flawed
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 07 July 2023
Being unwell I tried to use the online consultation form, but it was constantly unavailable due to high demand. Two days later (Wednesday) I managed to secure a place and sent off my plea for help. I got a text saying a doctor would ring me on Friday. Friday came - no call. I rang on Monday and after 20 minutes wait, was told that the appointment was booked for 3 weeks ahead. Came the appointed day - no call and by the time it was clear I wasn't getting a call the surgery had closed. The system is broken and no one seems to care.

I need to make an appointment to see a Dr, but I've more chance of seeing God. I phoned yesterday at 4.30- I was position 25, but at least I was in the queue, 35mins later I got through, only to be told 'there was nothing s/he could do as it was nearly 5.00. I should phone tomorrow 8.30. So I did and was already no 22. I waited, and waited and then waited some more, only to be told by a person that I had to fill out an Econsult form first.(I did and I'm going round in circles) Why, oh why couldn't that be included in the recorded message. I have paid for over an hour of phone use on this and am still no nearer seeing a doctor. It is a total unmitigated disaster. When I do eventually get past the front door, care is very good. Why are you still restricting entry? I hope this is seen by some of the partners. I wish I could escalate this. Do I expect anything to change??? Not really, I live more in hope than expectation. I recognise the difficulties we have all been living under, and although I am a pragmatic person and have trundled along through the pandemic with equanimity, but really this is not acceptable, and I apologise to the couple of staff I've been ratty with over this.

Review titled Impossible to contact non-urgent out of hours
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 05 February 2023
For several years now, the practice has been completely uncontactable out of hours. I often find I have non-urgent or admin queries out of hours (like over the weekend) that do not need to be triaged or dealt with until later the following week but due to suffering very bad brain fog, I will usually forget I need to ask the question by Monday. For example, today I want to know if there is any way I can have a back-up prescription for my meds as (thanks, brain fog) I often forget to order them, and spend several days off them; like at the moment. That’s a really non-urgent query but I have to wait until Monday to ask (either by eConsult - what a waste of triage time - or by spending an hour or so on the phone - what a waste of mine and the receptionists time). At which point, I’ll be back at work, hopefully have collected my meds and won’t even remember I needed to ask the question. As someone who is a sufferer of two long-term chronic illnesses that can cause severe brain fog, I often feel quite excluded by this lack of communication options and like I’m left with no where to turn. Which has had me extremely upset and in tears on several occasions because I can’t even send an email with a simple admin query. I have reviewed this similar experience several times for years via the feedback button on their online consultation service, but have seen no change. I don’t see the point in an online consult service that is still only available during practice hours. Surely it’d be easier at that point to call the surgery? Personally, I think that’s why the phone lines are still so busy. When they first installed the eConsult service, you were able to submit a consult at any time day or night, which was perfect. It would then be triaged the next time the practice was open and dealt with accordingly. If this was the case, I wouldn’t even mind using the service to submit admin/non-urgent queries in place of an email address. I really thought that the eConsult service was going to be the solution to overloaded practice receptions but it’ll never work if it’s only as convenient as making the phone call anyway. At least then people know someone’s already heard them.

Review titled Fabulous caring practice
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anne Ley - Posted on 19 January 2023
My doctor has helped me through my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment every step of the way. I forever indebted to their caring understanding of what I have had to go thru including chemo. I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have people at the surgery you know you can rely on. A big thank you to one of the receptionist who shared experiences with me. I can highly recommend this practice. Thank you all of you at mayfield.
