  1. Review titled Unhelpful weight comments

Rated 4 stars out of 5

My daughter came to a health review to re-join the surgery and was told she is in the obese category. She keeps fit and she eats very healthily with awareness of what is healthy and unhealthy food. She also suffers with self esteem issues and anxiety. She is intelligent and understands that her build is curvaceous and always has been despite her diet. The nurse was clumsy and did not check how she might feel about what she was being told. She then became very anxious and had a panic attack in response to the check-up. Staff need to be more careful in how they approach such delicate issues in a world where especially girls and women feel under pressure to look a certain way. The NHS needs to think more carefully about the language used around especially young people when discussing weight and BMIs. The word “obese” is a negative term associated with being extremely overweight which my daughter is definitely not. Please can we change this language and have a more hollistic and less tick-box approach.

We are sorry to hear that your daughter was distressed following her review. As a health service we have a duty to discuss health promotion with our patients. We appreciate some of these conversations can be difficult and as such we will only ever use factually correct terminology. Whilst we try to address individual needs, our approach needs to be consistent for all patients.

  2. Review titled Speedy appointment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Called the practice in the morning, got an appointment the same day with my doctor of choice. Came away with prescription and a follow up appointment on an evening which prevents me having to take more time off work.

I visited for an appointment and was actually seen on time unlike other surgeries I've been to. Making my appointment was simple and straightforward too, this is a huge factor for me as in other surgery's it can be challenging to get an appointment.

  4. Review titled Patient Centred

My recent experience with Meltham Group practice was really positive. I was able to utilise the online booking system to book an appointment with a GP of my choice. My health concerns were taken very seriously and an agreed treatment plan was put into place. The GP worked with me to formulate a plan that was best for me. I’ve had a number of follow ups with the same level of care and attention. Thank you Meltham Group for your attention to detail and always putting patients first.

  5. Review titled Unhelpful

Rated 2 stars out of 5

Trying to get anywhere with this surgery is like pulling teeth. The majority of the reception staff are poorly trained and unable to access parts of the system required to give patients the full duty of care that you would expect. What one of them will tell you is impossible in the morning another will be able to sort out for you in a matter of minutes in the afternoon, it’s frustrating and when you have someone that needs on the spot efficiency regarding vital appointments, it’s not ideal that care givers have to multiple conversations and visits to the surgery due to incompetence when there time is best spent else where. Unfortunately is doesn’t stop there when you do manage to get appointments your often left waiting 25 minutes after you’re appointment time despite no-one else being in the waiting area, only to spend 2 minutes with the doctor. I would like to know when a doctor hasn’t seen a patient for a good 4 years plus would it not be a good idea to do a bit of a general health check up. Surely this would be a preventative measure and avoid future appointments, especially as it’s such a chore for you to see patients in the first place?
