Review titled The sad demise of a once great practice
Rated 1 star out of 5
by KROB - Posted on 24 June 2024
As a patient of Merrow Park for 40 years and been more than happy with the service and doctors, the contrast with the current management, is appalling. It is unsurprising that the current CQC review of this previously excellent surgery, concludes that improvement is needed. The reception staff do their best and beyond, but the turnover of medical staff is ridiculous. This, according to local report, due to the senior partner's demands, personality and management. A once excellent practice run for the patient, now seems to be run for profit. 4, later 5 doctors ran full surgeries daily, including Saturday morning, and on call for nights. Now, seemingly no doctor in the practice works a full week. Appointments which once (emergencies aside) were next day, became needing to be booked weeks ahead and then possibly only for a telephone call. These, necessary during the pandemic, should be no longer, unless expressly asked for. Now even pre booking is not allowed, no bookings for anything other than that day. You can sit on wait on the phone for 20-30 minutes, only to be told that all appointments are gone and to call back tomorrow. Although disabled, in ill health and need to be seen regularly, I have met my doctor (who I must say is excellent) just a few times. My appointed Dr having changed 3 times in recent years. The one doctor I would refuse to see, despite how necessary is the senior partner, who is both rude and arrogant. I have been shouted at across the surgery for trying to explain that a different doctor and not he was my dying father's physician. (He was wrong). etc etc. Please get better management, who are more interested in patients than profit, which means more doctors, more staff, longer surgeries and bring back a better service.

Review titled Terrible practice!!!
Rated 1 star out of 5
by C Sihon - Posted on 11 April 2024
Terrible practice, terrible service and extremely rude staff at the reception desks. I’ve phone this morning for an appointment at 8:00 , I’ve waited for about an hour and one of the ladies, very unpleasant and rude, she didn’t want to give me an appointment, saying that I’m not quite eligible for one, but to go to the pharmacy and if they don’t give me anything to keep calling them back , really ??? To waste another morning to tell me that they haven’t got any appointments or I’m not eligible for any, that it’s just appalling, as I’ve wasted so far 2 of my mornings this week , yesterday and today, without any results. Absolutely rubbish!!! Also I need to say this is not the first time I’m going through this with Merrow Park Surgery, so no improvements there whatsoever. Very disappointed indeed!!!

Review titled Different experience
Rated 4 stars out of 5

I was given an appointment at St Luke’s surgery yesterday as my practise wasn’t able to see my daughter. Merrow park surgery I have found always to be very welcoming and helpful and the staff very good with children but unfortunately the experience at St Luke’s wasn’t the same GP I saw did not engage with my daughter at all and was not particularly helpful nor good at communicating with children despite being told it was a paediatric specialist service. I am grateful for the kindness I experience at Merrow park surgery and the staffs manner with communicating with children which I didn’t experience at the other GP surgery Merrow park reception team I feel are very welcoming and helpful when speaking on phone or in person

Review titled Always so helpful!
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Samantha Walsh - Posted on 15 February 2024
Have recently moved to this practice having experienced a terrible service elsewhere in the area. Without exception the staff from reception through to the clinical are just brilliant. It can be difficult facing unwell, anxious patients (and their parents) but they have always been great and understanding. My son was seen today by the ANP who was just so kind and so knowledgable and quickly helped to manage his horrible tonsillitis! Keep being great at what you do!

I received wound dressings from nurses on 3, 10 and 17 November 2023. The appointments were all effected without delays and the medical treatment and advice were excellent.

Review titled Refused reasonable adjustments
Rated 3 stars out of 5

I was a very happy patient at this practice for many years but it has changed a lot recently and it now appears to be more concerned with money than patients' health. It used to be possible to make appointments on the phone and online on the day for emergencies and further ahead for routine visits. Recently they have decided that all patients now have to call the surgery around 8am for a same day appointment. I spoke to various staff, including the practice manager, about this as it is very difficult for me to do so. I explained my difficulties to him and mentioned that other patients would likely have similar issues, as well as full-time workers and parents taking children to school etc. I was lied to and told this was a government requirement but when I said I had spoken to NHS England who denied it, the staff had to acknowledge it is a practice decision driven by the way money is allocated. I was told I could use the online form in the morning instead of calling the surgery, but when I asked how the forms would be prioritised when staff were dealing with the phones, the manager had no answer. I tried to make an appointment this morning and was told to call back the next day due to GP availability. I again explained my difficulties but was told the same thing. I asked to speak to the manager but he made himself unavailable (the receptionist had just spoken to him so I assumed he just didn't want to talk to me). I emailed the practice manager with a request for reasonable adjustments and explained the reasons but he responded with the same process and again said I can fill in an online form in the morning instead of calling. I replied and clarified that I need to make appointments ahead of time because of my health issues but have not received a response. This feels not only extremely rigid and unsympathetic, but discriminatory as the surgery have acknowledged they make some future appointments for some patients but are refusing to accommodate my needs.

Doctor's appointment was within 6 days of need to see one (non urgent issues) and the Doctor was efficient, kind and explained diagnosis well. A good experience.

Review titled Prescribing by numbers and algorithms
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 07 March 2023
I attended the surgery after a telephone consultation. After being examined, the doctor referred me for investigations based on their findings which were described as 'urgent'. I was seen at RSCH in a week and other tests were completed by the surgery. The initial consultation was thorough, supportive and reassuring. After investigations were complete I attempted to make an appointment to see the relevant doctor to receive the results. Despite the seemingly 'urgent' nature of the tests, the first available appointment, a phone call, was not for nearly a month. It is not appropriate to discuss the results of tests which, based on family history, may indicate a potentially serious medical condition, over the phone. To attend in person I would need to wait even longer 'unless the doctor needed to see me'. Whether the doctor 'needs to see' a patient who has undergone tests in these circumstances is not the point. The patient's need to see the doctor to discuss results, hopefully to obtain peace of mind but aware that they may need to discuss further care, is the priority in this situation but this has been completely disregarded. I have been reduced to a set of numbers on a data sheet, which if considered satisfactory by a doctor, any doctor, not necessarily the doctor who requested the tests, I may never be informed about. When I tried to explain to the receptionist that for my mental wellbeing, I had a need to obtain and discuss the results as a matter of urgency, I was told I could not be given an earlier appointment as the hospital report was not yet received. I was not allowed to book ahead to a time toward the end of the next week when it should have arrived but 'if I wanted to chase it' then maybe I could be seen sooner. I am capable to make the necessary phone calls to 'chase' test results but many people may not be and frankly, it is not the patient's responsibility to do so. Later that day I received a text from a doctor I've never met, informing me they had prescribed medication based on test results. No discussion with me, no concern. Presumably I should unquestioningly accept the drugs despite serious concerns re side effects because on paper I fit some kind of algorithm and therefore it's 'in my best interests'. This is not patient centred health care but prescribing by numbers and with a dismissive and cavalier attitude to the individual needs of service users. Individual staff here may be good and caring but systems let them and therefore their patients, down. The NHS is not free, our taxes pay for this inadequate, uncaring 'service'. Our vet does a better, more caring job.

I have just returned from a visit to Merrow Park Surgery after having appointments for both myself and my daughter. Both Drs were warm, welcoming and super helpful. I cannot fault the service received whether it is for myself or my children. Thank you!
