Review titled Excellent practice
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 14 February 2025
Over the last 6 months I have had to use the surgery quite a bit. On every occasion I have found the practice excellent-this includes the receptionists , the pharmacists, the nurses doing bloods at the Hub and the doctors. Each one I consider shows strong values in efficiency , empathy, hard work, kindness and where possible humour. If I have gad to wait beyond a scheduled appointment time it is only because they are giving full consideration for the patients in front. I really feel that they are all interested in my wellbeing and the doctors are very considerate and interested in my health issues which is a form of medicine in itself. A case in point was picking up on an irregular blood result and being proactive on my diabetes .

Review titled Fantastic practice and staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I cannot thank the staff team at Orchard Surgery enough for the quality of care that both I and my family have received over recent months. In particular, after suffering for a long time with women’s health related issues, I visited the GP in November for advice. The GP was incredibly empathetic, understanding and kind and very much helped me to feel able to talk openly about the difficulties I had been experiencing. He was very professional and took the time to explore and explain the different options available to me and positively encouraged me to follow up with him again if my symptoms did not improve. My subsequent appointment with the practice nurse was equally as wonderful. I was very anxious about the examination, but the nurse made me feel completely safe, cared for and understood. She was incredibly patient and kind, and following the procedure made a referral for me to be seen quickly by the hospital. A few appointments later, and whilst still on the road to a long term solution, I now have the answers I needed which validated my concerns. The specialists at the hospital also praised the level of care I had received so far by the GP and practice nurse, explaining that the treatment given and next steps discussed were exactly what they would also have recommended. They said it was really heartening to know that a local GP had been so “on it” with women’s health. The team at the practice reception and over the phone are always incredibly kind and understanding too. Phone lines, naturally, are busy at peak times, but once through I have always been met with kindness. Truly, if it weren’t for the professionalism, care and empathy of the staff at Orchard Surgery, I would likely still be struggling to manage my symptoms alone. I cannot thank the team enough and would highly recommend this practice. Thank you.

I had to have a procedure today which involved a major phobia. My clinician was understanding, compassionate and extremely professional. I felt valued, understood and there was no hurry to usher me out for the next patient. I am very grateful. Thank you

Review titled Poor practice

I had poor experience with the GP surgery ! I met with no caring and compassionate GP! I felt that I’m not being listened and cared for ! GP declined to prescribe pain killers when I mentioned that I’m in a lot of pain and left me to deal with it myself not even suggesting a plan !

Review titled Just dreadful
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Annonymous - Posted on 10 July 2024
Whys it impossible to ring up and make a face to face appointment with a doctor of your choice? Having requested to make an appointment today, the offer was for 8th August and a phone call. The only alternative offered was, as the receptionist put it, 'the dreaded 8.30 contact'. In my previous surgery every morning between 8.30 and 10.00 an Open Surgery was run, a designated GP saw any one arriving between those times in order. If one surgery can manage that why not this one. Why can you not be given a face to face appointment, I thought phone consultations were to be a last resort. In addition, why if you turn up in person do you have to give details of the reason for an appointment in such a public manner. I have sat in that waiting room listening to some most intimate details of peoples' health. The receptionists seem to be the guardians to repel anyone daring to request actually seeing a doctor. I find this whole situation quite frightening. An email was sent to a specific doctor giving details of a deblitating health issue, asking for advice or an appointment, as of yet, no reply. Again, an email sent to my previous surgery got a response within hours and a phone call from a GP with either advice or an appointment. This surgery may be 'the norm' now but it is far from acceptable.

Review titled Poorly managed practice
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 08 May 2024
Sadly the experience I just had at Orchard Surgery confirmed my suspicion that this is a failing practice. The appointment system does not work. Virtually everyone is asked to phone at 08.30, which means the lines are overloaded and extremely long waits are standard. I have never managed to get an appointment this way, by the time I speak to a receptionist no appointments are left. This time I had more success calling in the afternoon. Although the standard answer was spouted first of all "sorry, no appointments, call in the morning" I asked if I could have an evening or weekend appointment. The answer surprised me "thank you for reminding me we had weekend appointments"! How odd. Anyway, it did manage to release an elusive time slot. But why does it have to be this way? Why do patients have to fight for an appointment? I also think it is inappropriate for the receptionist to insist on knowing why you want to see the doctor. She is not clinically trained, she does not subscribe to the same level of ethics as a clinician, sitting in the waiting room it is not unusual to hear them gossiping in the back office, my medical condition is none of their business. I resorted to just saying I had a sore elbow (or some such vague condition) which seemed to satisfy her. In my experience, the GPs and nurses are friendly and professional, as they were on this occasion. The surgery is let down by its systems and processes. I feel for the receptionists, they are mostly short-tempered and unhelpful but I'm sure this is because they are as frustrated at the system as the patients are. Unfortunately, I fear that the consequence of this poorly run practice is that people won't bother getting symptoms checked out when they ought to as it really does require nerves of steel to navigate the system.

Dear patient . Thank you for your feedback regarding our appointment system. We are aware of the difficulties in getting through on the telephone and are currently looking at a new provider to upgrade our system. With regard to why the receptionists need to ask why you need an appointment, it is not because they are able to make clinical judgement - as you say , they are not clinically trained, it is merely to ensure that you are seen by the most appropriate clinician , be that a GP or Practice Nurse. There are also a number of conditions that can now be seen by your local pharmacist, and our receptionists are able to signpost you to those services where appropriate. This in turn frees up appointments for those who really need to see a GP. We continually review out processes and when doing so, will take your comments on board. Many thanks - Practice Manager
