Review titled Oodles of empathy
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mark Percival - Posted on 28 November 2024
3 weeks in hospital and multiple antibiotic courses finally got cellulitis under control and retreating. However, it left a legacy. Large blisters were now healing slowly. I had to regain mobility and swollen legs persisted. August 2024 was mostly spent in hospital. Post-hospital revealed a newly discovered infrastructure I never anticipated, the GP Surgery Nursing Team. It took a few weeks for my surgery's crammed diary to make much room for my repeated pursuit of leg dressings and management advice. However, once assessed, the Parkbury House Surgery referral to the nursing team opened up a new vista. It is now the end of November 2024. I have seen the various members of the nursing team twice a week for about 3 months. They have tried multiple dressing types. My leg is again leg-shaped and working almost as before, but one small area refuses to heal. Each visit to the nurse has been like hearing the next verse in a song. One follows the other in step and in tune. Occasionally, the nurse has conjured up a GP for a descant. I thought I saw genuine respect on show here, the GPs respecting the nurses experience and knowledge about how to get healing done. The whole team were determined on my behalf, with empathy bringing me onto their side to do the things that supported their efforts; exercise, leg compressions and other stuff. Now the little leg lesion has a new name - an ulcer. This still refuses to heal so the nurse team has called in their specialist colleagues; the Area Ulcer Team. I suspect I am moving from a smaller choir to a much larger one but I also feel I am still going to be watched over by my surgery's nursing team like a manager conducting their project's progress with external help but still with ownership. Lets hear it for the nurses and find ways to spread empathy and sensitivity more widely into the technology / specialist fog that makes it difficult to see the whole person, irrespective of whether they are patient or staff member.

Review titled Great care of elderly
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Rachel McNeill - Posted on 21 October 2024
My father has been looked after by Parkbury House since moving back to St Albans 6 years ago. He had vascular dementia following a stroke, but lived independently, supported by carers from a local agency. In the last couple of years he suffered increasingly from falls but was supported very well by the Frailty team at the Practice. In the last months of his life, his GP and frailty nurse worked well together and with me to support him in his own home and keep him out of hospital as much as possible. They were able to ensure that he was kept comfortable and happy even after a second major stroke this summer. The Practice continued to support him for his last few weeks which were spent in a local nursing home. At all times I felt that my father was treated as a human being rather than a collection of symptoms, and communication with both of us was excellent. I see on the Practice website that the Frailty team have recently won an award which doesn’t surprise me at all. Thank you for everything.

Review titled Terrible response to parking issue
Rated 1 star out of 5

I was recently referred to Parkbury House to see the physiotherapist by my Grange Street surgery and didn’t know the system! I displayed my blue badge, assuming that would be sufficient but in my haste to attend the appointment on time overlooked the registration process ….. resulting in a very hefty fine! I was not advised to enter my registration on screen by any members of staff. Despite appealing this on the grounds of me having a legitimate appointment for the 20 minutes I was there, this was declined & today I received a debt collectors letter requesting £170! Sadly Parkbury House surgery advised that there was ‘nothing they could do about this (despite them employing UK Car Park Management Ltd?!). I have had both telephone conversations & written communication but in both cases, very unhelpful responses & lacking humility! This seems a very unreasonable way to treat a genuine patient suffering from osteoarthritis & requiring treatment.

I have been struggling with my health . I had a telephone review the Dr was amazing listening to the many things I needed to talk about also made me appointment for 5-15 the same evening . For the first time I actually really felt listened to and all my concerns were met by amazing Drs . I work in healthcare so know the pressures I have felt frustrated not getting earlier appointment. But just wow the treatment and support I have received today . 👏👏👏👏 well done Parkbury house and the 2 outstanding Drs I have had contact with today .

Review titled Down hill fast….
Rated 1 star out of 5

We’ve been patients here for just over a year. Initially it seemed like the best place in town. However in the last year the service has gone down hill dramatically. Today I was going to be late for an apt, for my infant. I tried to call to let them know, or to cancel if need be, was the 1st called in the queue for 25min no one ever answered. I arrived there to have my apt canceled…. Awesome! We are still waiting on imaging results and lab work for an ongoing issue for my partner. Tests were done in June, I called to get results this week was told they hadn’t even been viewed by the Dr. What???? Then was told when they are viewed they’d get back to me. I had to suggest maybe reminding the Dr that they haven’t been viewed and need follow up as this is still an on going issue, the girl on the phone had no clue how to help. They don’t answer the phone, when they do they don’t know how to assist. The system is failing left and right. If you can get in to be seen most of the drs and nurses are fairly good if not great. But you have to get through the mess of a system first.
