Review titled Very happy with this practice
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by CKay - Posted on 03 December 2024
I would like to commend Portland Medical Centre for their excellent service in all departments whether it's enquiring about an NHS Health Check, following up with a clinician or getting in touch with them about a medical issue or medication. I like to have a record of any correspondence so contacting them online is my preferred method of the initial communication and I find that they normally reply by text/SMS with the next steps within an hour (mostly) or two (if busy) during their opening times, which is truly fantastic. They triage their customers based on their enquiries to determine which clinician to assign to you, depending on your specific enquiry. All the staff who have handled my enquiries whether over the phone or in-person have been brilliant, from the receptionists to nurses to PAs to pharmacists to overseeing GPs. spanning from their attention to detail, level of knowledge, professionalism and friendliness. Many thanks.

Review titled Only expect to see, at best, a physician associate
Rated 1 star out of 5

I have twice, in 3 years, received a phone call (very rarely will you get an in person appointment) from a gp. When you get a call booked in, it’s often in a couple of weeks time, and it will be “on the afternoon of X date”, meaning you have to sit by the phone all afternoon. I was once allowed to see a paramedic at the surgery, who couldn’t prescribe me what I needed. Finally, 18 months ago, I complained to this surgery that they had uploaded someone else’s hospital letter to my medical record. They assured me they sorted it, and I thought nothing more of it. At a recent appointment at a different nhs service, it was raised to me that this document was still on my account. I logged in on the NHS app and I still have access to another patient’s full name, don, address, nhs number and knowledge of their condition. Excellent work, Portland Medical! They turn off their online portal at 5pm (Klinik, one of the worst user experiences of any appointment booking software I’ve ever encountered), which means that after 5pm, you can’t really get in touch with the surgery, despite them claiming to be open until 6pm / 8:30pm on some days. The staff in the surgery are actually lovely, but there’s so many hoops to jump through to prove you’re worthy of being seen in person.

Review titled no duty of care

Called to enquire about a scan (as recommended by consultant following surgery), Spoke to GP in May, advised this scan had been requested but called today (5 months later) to enquire about this as have not heard about appt date & found out from Admin/ secretary that no scan had been requested and there was no documentation regarding scan following my telephone review with the GP. I was made to feel that my this part of the consult had never occurred, there was no empathy /understanding or apology. This is on the back of poor service after 2 x operations earlier in the year for a 'serious condition' where I had mentioned the scan advised by the surgeon and electronic request for appointments and recommended medication post surgery was not actioned, When I did have a call from a 'physicians assistant' who was rude and abrasive when I advised her what had been recommended by my surgeon and she said I sounded depressed & did not want to discuss my symptoms but rather just assumed based on the on line form which i had to complete and when I advised her the symptoms I was experiencing were related to surgery and not depression she said 'do you want antidepressants or not'

Review titled Very happy with treatment
Rated 4 stars out of 5

I recently received excellent support/treatment from the staff at the surgery. After a long bout I of diarrhea I contacted the surgery on the advice of the local pharmacist. A doctor phoned me straight away and took details. Other phone appointments were made over the next few weeks, all professional and thorough. The surgery finally organised for me to have procedures at Croydon University Hospital which have just happened. This last treatment by Portland Medical Centre has been far better than past experience when I felt the staff did not care. It was the reason I asked the pharmacy for advice rather than a doctor at the practice.

Once again I left my prescriptions for my hart problem and after one week the pharmacy did not receive the order from them, went back to the practise and the receptionist which seemed that she didn't want to be there working reply with such a bad attitude as always, this is a recurring problem, every single time and I still haven't got my medicine. bad service, awful attitude from the people at the front desk, impossible to get an appointment considering that in last few years I had a hart attack, Angina, and most recently cancer.

Review titled Lacking in patient care and poor communication
Rated 1 star out of 5

I recently joined this practice and have been severely disappointed by the service offered. The surgery feels more like an emergency service than your local GP. You can only book an appointment by filling out an online form which is then sent to a central booking team for triage. It feels like the surgery’s goal is then to avoid giving you an appointment at all costs. I normally just receive a text message back from the surgery either prescribing me medication without ever speaking to me (they’ve prescribed me antibiotics without ever speaking to me and diagnosed my newborn baby without ever seeing her), or to tell you your issue is not what you think it is, but offering no advice or follow up. Because you cannot reply to the text messages they send, the only way to go back to them is to join the triage queue again. It really does feel like being left alone with your medical problems and that so much time is wasted going round and round in the triage system instead of just giving you an appointment or a phone consultation. Patient care or continuity of care doesn’t seem to be a consideration at the surgery. I really hope they’ll listen to patients and fix this mess.

Dear patient, Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry to hear you have felt your care needs have not been met. We do use a triage system, where patients provide us with full medical details at first contact online or by the phone. This is then dealt with by our GP and allied health professional team. This model of care was published in the NHS primary recovery plan as best practice. It has also ensured our patients have a waiting time that is a fraction of the national average of 2 weeks. I would like to discuss the feedback with you directly. We are proud to be the highest rated GP surgery in the area. Please contact us via the website https://www.portlandmedicalcentre.co.uk/patient-feedback and someone from the management team will be in touch. Kindly, Aleksandra Practice Operations Manager

Review titled Great practice when you are not ill
Rated 2 stars out of 5

PMC is brilliant for anything scheduled (vaccines, smears, yearly reviews, etc), but you better not be ill and in need of seeing a doctor, as you will maybe speak to someone on the phone (if you're lucky), or receive a text with self-help guidance. I have even had antibiotics prescribed on text for my 3 yo child without anybody having seen her. I'm not a healthcare professional and I do not believe my ability to describe a symptom should be the deciding factor on a treatment for my kids (or myself to be honest).

Review titled Lacking care and attention
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Matthew Swift - Posted on 24 September 2023
My wife and I were wanting some feedback about test results and next steps for fertility treatment. So we’ve been waiting six months assuming that we are going to hear from a specialist only to find out that the surgery had never referred us. Now we are at the start of the process again. This surgery needs a serious review looking into the way that they communicate and care for patients.
