Review titled You couldn't make it up
Rated 3 stars out of 5

I would like to describe my recent experience of using NHS services and leave you to draw your own conclusions. The NHS is blessed with such vast resources and has so many excellent people working for it that it just baffles me that it seems to exist in a state of such perpetual crisis. My daughter developed a blister on her leg after ice skating over Christmas. The blister became infected. A minor issue you might think which should be easy to deal with but mark the sequel. My daughter started feeling unwell and became lethargic so my wife called our GP practice but couldn’t get through. She drove to the practice, which was devoid of patients (prior to the Covid pandemic it was always packed), but was told that there were no appointments. She then drove to the UTC in Canterbury where the doctor prescribed antibiotics. After a few days the wound looked worse and so we called 111 and were advised to return to the UTC. They sent us to the paediatric A&E in Margate where we were advised to contact our GP and ask for the course of antibiotics to be extended. I called the GP the next morning at 08:02 and was placed 34th in the queue. I left my details and was called back an hour later (this is one of the few positive aspects of this entire affair). I explained the issue and was put on hold while the receptionist conferred with the GP. Eventually I was advised to fill in an e-consult. I filled in the e-consult and was advised to speak to a GP (you can understand my frustration by this point). I fiddled my responses to the e-consult until it submitted successfully. The GP contacted me to confirm that the prescription had been extended. The course of antibiotics ended but the wound looked no better. We returned to the Canterbury UTC and different antibiotics were prescribed. After several days there was no improvement and we went directly to the paediatric A&E at QEQM. They sent us to their own UTC but they couldn’t see us because we had no ‘blue form’. We returned to the paediatric A&E to collect a blue form and were then admitted to the UTC. The nurse there provided some different dressings and advised us to continue with the antibiotics but contact our GP to get the wound swabbed. We contacted the GP and were offered an appointment a few days later at a sister practice. The GP swabbed the wound (this is several weeks after the initial contact with the NHS) and we awaited the results. No results were forthcoming so we contacted the practice and were told that the latest antibiotics were indeed the right ones to combat the particular species of microbe identified in the swab. After a few days the wound did begin to heal and after a month or so my daughter’s leg was looking almost back to normal. (Continued)

Review titled A truly stressful and negative experience
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Peter Futcher - Posted on 12 May 2023
As a BP/Kidney patient, I try to avoid stress where possible. When you receive a text to say "Please call tomorrow at 8.30 to make a phone appointment to discuss your blood results" you do not immediately think that this is good news. Stressful. You call at 8.30 and are 17th in the queue. It takes until 8.59 for someone to answer and say there are no slots, please call back on Monday. Will the same happen again? Not at all stressful then, waiting all weekend to find out what is what. Awful experience. Wholly avoidable.

Review titled Deteriorating Service
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Terry Brown - Posted on 13 April 2023
I remember the days when you made an appointment and saw a Doctor and more often than not one who had knowledge of your medical history. Today it is difficult to make an appointment to see any Doctor and for a "telephone" appointment you even have to wait almost 2 weeks. You are sent for tests where I assume the surgery makes a % then receive SMS for a meeting but no one is available for weeks ahead! Service has definitely deteriorated at the practice and although they have more "technology" the ability to deliver the basics is a bit disappointing. If you ever get to see the receptionists they are extremely helpful and the doctors seem to know there stuff but the administration/management of the facility leaves a lot to be desired.
