Review titled Medical staff declined to assist with CPR medical emergency
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 03 March 2025
Ethically questionable decision to refuse a request from a fellow healthcare professional to assist with a medical emergency, that occurred at Wetherspoons Ralph Fitzgerald (50 yards away) on 14th Feb 2025. Your team could have stepped up to assist those healthcare professionals undertaking CPR with a public AED that initially did not work. You may want to remind your staff that GPs are obligated by the GMC to assist in a medical emergency, if they can safely do, regardless of where it occurs; this was 50 yards away. Simply sending your receptionist back with the message 'wait for the ambulance' is a pretty poor response. Your team’s assistance in providing staff/access to emergency resus kit may not have made any difference to the outcome but you might have at least tried.

Hello, I am very sorry that you have had a need to write the above. I was not in practice on Friday 14th February, however I was told of the incident on my return on Monday 17th. I have spoken with all the staff involved, both receptionists tell me that three ladies came in from Wetherspoons requesting oxygen, the defibrillator was not asked for. Whilst the receptionist was speaking with the on duty GP the ambulances were heard arriving. The GP did say the ambulances have arrived now, with the meaning that they would have oxygen on board. Anyone attending from the practice would have arrived after the ambulance service. I would like to reiterate that at no time were we asked to attend with a defibrillator.
