  1. Review titled An Exceptional and Excellent Practice!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Michelle Howard - Posted on 15 April 2025

As I am an expat in the Uk., I was unsure how easy or difficult it would be to access services for health concerns. Having come from another country with a universal health care plan, I had no real expectations beyond the kind of care I received in Canada. I have now been in the u.k. for 13 years and some months, and I have had some medical emergencies, needed specialist care, and it was the doctors here, in the u.k., who diagnosed me with my chronic condition after being treated terribly by my gp back in Canada (where one sticks with their gp, as it can take years to find a practice taking new patients, leaving you at the mercy of walk-in clinics who cannot prescribe repeat prescriptions, except for birth control, cannot refer you to specialists and leaves a lot of people with issues waiting for sometimes up to 8-10 hours in the emergency room for care to be referred when you have an issue. So one keeps their gp, even if you are unhappy with their care, there simply isn’t much recourse. I have had physicians in this country who brushed me off too, and we lived on the other side of the country for 10 years. The last surgery we were registered at, had lovely receptionists and some fantastic doctors and some doctors who were not interested or committed to helping you get to the bottom of serious concerns and issues. So when I did not have a choice of which gp to see (before Covid, when appointments were always face to face), I would be left feeling frustrated. So when we moved here, I was concerned. But I shouldn’t have been. Every single individual, every locum doctor, every doctor who is permanent at the practice and the receptionists and nurses have done nothing but take the time to hear my concerns, kept me in the loop and explained the care, medications and treatments I had to have in a concise and clear manner, taking into account, respecting and using my own knowledge of my complex condition and co-morbidities to help and support me the very best they could. I have never felt so seen by my doctors and it doesn’t seem to matter which doctor I speak to…they have all been supportive, friendly and committed to giving me the best of care. They’ve contacted specialists when the wait has been exceptionally long, and if they couldn’t provide me with what I needed, they would do the best they could to support me until the specialist could see me. So many people complain about the nhs and the service and the wait times, but I feel fortunate that there are practices out there, that despite the difficulties and wait times us patients have to endure when we need something more specialised, do their absolute best to make sure we know they are there for us and on our side. It is *so* refreshing that every time I speak to or see a doctor, I don’t have to give my whole medical history, because they take the time to know us, and understand our specific needs as patients. Anyone who is a patient here is incredibly lucky!!

  2. Review titled Online booking mystery

Rated 4 stars out of 5

Trying to see/talk to a dr concerning hypertension monitor sheet that I submitted to the practise. So I booked a tel consult through nhs app for several weeks in the future. Meanwhile I saw that there were available spaces on the app for a sooner appt. I tried to book & the system wdnt let me. Rang the surgery & was told someone had booked that appt. Fair enough. I was advised to call at 8am on the following week. I return to the app & see that there are 2 appts showing available in 4 days time. Again the system will not allow me to book. Obviously should I succeed in getting one of these appts I wd cancel my appointment that is for several weeks in the future. If I cancel the distant one first I run the risk of not aquiring the sooner appt. Why is it so difficult? Is there a rule you can only book 1 appt? I would be grateful for an explanation.

  3. Review titled Fantastic surgery that takes an holistic approach to care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Westfield is a small, individual practice and very responsive to patients needs. I have chronic health conditions, last weeks bloods threw up some unexpected concerns. I was called immediately to come in for a face to face appointment with my registered GP. I was seen on time. GP was very reassuring, she took time to explain my results and ensured that I understood them. As alarming as my results were, I felt supported and reassured that I wasn't alone and that we had a clear plan moving forward. As has often been the case, the GP gave me the time required to understand and process the information. At no time did I feel that she was watching the clock, it felt that it was as important to her as it was me to understand the results and make a plan to positivity move forward. I think it is important that each patient, when necessary, is given the time they need to process, discuss and understand a diagnosis. I am happy for my appointment time to be delayed if it means another patient is being given the time and attention they need. In my experience, appointment times usually balance out themselves meaning no one is greatly inconvenienced but each patient is given individualised care. When making an appointment there is the option to book online, or you can easily speak to a human at the end of the telephone line. It is easy to make repeat prescription requests, onine, by email or over the telephone. Westfield is a smaller individual surgery, so it may not have some of the bells and whistles larger and super sized practices have, but what Westfield does have is precious and seemingly rare. They have professionals who take an holistic approach to know you as well as your medical condition.

Superb GPs. Routine telephone or face to face appointments available within a couple of weeks. Emergency same day. I’ve seen a few different doctors for me and my children, 1 with chronic health issues, 1 with. Critical illnesses. All staff have been so helpful, kind and proactive.

  6. Review titled Misleading booking online booking system

Rated 3 stars out of 5

i booked a telephone consultation (as unable to book an appointment with my GP via this method) 10 days hence (earliest I could get). the slot i booked was a 10 minute window. nowhere did it mention that was not the time i would be called. I waited 30 minutes before calling the surgery after my allotted slot only to be told its actually a 3 hour window! that's never been the case before and that the GP called me not on my landline (the only phone that works in the house) but on my mobile which i keep telling them not to use. Moreover the GP has gone on leave by the time I called and the earliest i can see him is 4th August (at least they booked a face to face this time). its not easy to get an appointment face to face but if the telephone consultation is a 3 hour window why ask people to book a ten minute slot? and why not tell them they have to wait by the phone for 3 hours? Its never happened before so i think something is not right with the answer i was given
