  1. Review titled Avoidable and Dangerous Mistakes

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Sarah Shackleton - Posted on 15 November 2024

A most recent experience at the Whitworth surgery was unpleasant and dangerous to say the least, I am not only saddened by the lack of care or due diligence given to my mum during this most recent visit, but fearful for future treatments being administered appropriately with due care and consideration, and in a timely fashion. Mum presented for treatment with a severe infection of the dermis deeper layers and an angry heated swelling of her entire right lower leg, a possible episode of Cellulitis that could still lead to life threatening sepsis and further potential complications for mum, who may I add is already a Rheumatoid sufferer and susceptible to immune response failure or attack. This consultation on Monday 11th November 2024 was mismanaged by the prescribing practitioner due to the lack of time and care to read notes and conduct a thorough examination, relying on mum reminding the practitioner that she has reaction to penicillin. Furthermore, 3 days later when mums health deteriorated further with severe sickness, we called the surgery and raised the issue with reception also stating that from re-reading medication leaflets the medication prescribed for the infection on Monday was in fact absolutely not compatible with one or more of mum's ongoing medication regime, and could we really be sure Mum wasn't already experiencing signs and symptoms of septic shock! As promised by the receptionist, a call back from the practitioner was expected before the end of the day but this has not happened and an abject failure to care has again occurred.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you had an unpleasant experience at the Practice. All allergies are noted in the patient's medical record. This creates an alert when prescribing to advise the clinician of any allergies. Your Mum's Penicillin allergy is noted in her record but clinicians still ask the patient if they have allergies as standard procedure. I am sorry that this caused you concern. The medication your Mum was given had a theoretical risk of interaction with one of her regular medicines but this won't stop clinicians from prescribing it if they feel it is the best course of treatment. It is good practice however to advise the patient of any theoretical interactions and I am sorry this did not happen. I can see that the Pharmacist issued an alternative medicine on 15th November at 4pm and this was sent to your Mum's nominated pharmacy.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you struggled to get through to use on the telephone. We use a cloud-based system, which sometimes goes down due to poor internet connectivity in the area or other unforeseen reasons.
