Review titled Was instructed to pay for NHS Services in A&E
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Brian Waddicor-Critchley - Posted on 19 November 2024
Never in my life have I gone to A&E and been asked to pay for services such as a scan of my knee or a simple explanation of my injury in writing. I was told it was wear and tear. Then it was a soft tissue injury. An then when asking for a written explanation get handed a knee sprain standard form and the band 7 nurse I saw refused point blank unless I paid her to write my outcome on a piece of paper. My personal expectations of the NHS is a service with the only aim to help people. Free at the point of access. A band 7 wants to charge her NHS patients and I personally would deem this to be gross misconduct given she is employed by the NHS. I have contacted PALS but would like this to be highlighted of the treatment provided by Barnsley hospital. I believe a band 7 nurse to be the one explaining she will do work if I personally pay her. This is beyond disgraceful. I believe she should not be allowed to work with the general public when she is requesting payment of services in the NHS. I hope her bosses are aware she suggests private payment for services provided by the NHS?

Review titled Meticulous care and treatment
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Peter Driver - Posted on 07 November 2024
Visited A & E after a fall which had caused deep cuts to my head and hand. The department was short of staff and there was, understandably, long waiting times. However, the care was meticulous and I cannot imagine anything more that could be done. I was surprised to receive follow up calls from 2 doctors when I arrived home to Cheltenham.

These amazing midwife’s really are a blessing, I had quite a difficult birth but I felt supported from start to finish and I can not thank the three women that helped me enough. Especially the trainee midwife who was so so caring and attentive. I really really appreciate the whole experience.

Review titled Total professionalism
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Barry Eldred - Posted on 14 November 2024
From Cleaner to Consultant and back again. Dear Team 34, I was a patient on your ward for elective surgery for the two days of October 21st and 22nd. My care from the whole team was an experience which left me with a deep feeling of gratitude. From the moment of reception when I was greeted and booked-in to the time of my discharge I was treated with smiles, respect, and total professionalism. Everything was explained to me with great care and where appropriate paperwork was provided. It gave me a feeling of great confidence and the belief that I was in safe hands. I am pleased to report that I think that I am progressing well. I am pain free and can see progress on a daily basis. The Consultan's skill has enabled me to look forward to many more years of active life. The decision to operate was discussed and explained with great care and deliberated over carefully considering that I was about to celebrate my 80th birthday! I am indebted to him and his team for an amazing outcome; I just hope he thinks the same when he sees me next! As a patient sitting in my chair I was able to observe the way in which all members of the team collaborated and supported each other. The catering staff with their life-giving tea and recuperative hot buttered toast. The diligence of cleaning staff. The stories of the students from Sheffield Hallam University and their dreams and hopes for careers in nursing: Everyone of them a star in the making. The nurses who ‘loved to’ wake me every half an hour for my vital signs, with there enquiring questions about how I was feeling, and did I have all that I needed. No amount of money could have bought me better care and I am both grateful and proud that this has all happened in ‘my hospital’. You are an exemplar for health care as it should be practiced and for the faultless training which lies behind that care. The two words, ‘Thank You’, seem very meagre but are most sincerely meant.

Review titled Pleasant - Helpful - Informed Staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mrs Wendy Gill - Posted on 15 September 2024
On 14th September 2024, I had an appointment with the Ophthalmology department in Barnsley District General Hospital. The receptionists on duty were efficient and greeted me as soon as I approached the reception desk. I confirmed my name, DOB and address and was asked to take a seat. A few minutes later my name was called and I followed the lady on reception into an examining room. The process of my appointment was started and and I could find no fault with what followed. My treatment was completed and roughly two hours later I was on my way home. Thank you very much Barnsley District General Hospital, for the care your staff took of me. Brilliant service. From a very satisfied patient.

The staff fitted me in without an appointment when I was worried about high eye pressure after a cataract removed. The doctor I saw and all the staff couldn't have been more helpful couldn't have done more for me

Review titled Helpful and Efficient Staff - Great Service
Rated 5 stars out of 5

Your message Compliment for Barnsley District Hospital Clinic Date: 28/08/2024. Dept: Ophthalmology. On the 28th August 2024, I had an appointment in the afternoon at Barnsley District General Hospital for a glaucoma check. I was asked to arrive half an hour early and I complied with the request. I signed in and was asked to take a seat. A few minutes later my name was called and I followed a member of staff into an examining room. I was then asked again to take a seat and my name would be called. This procedure continued for other examination tests in different rooms. The last room I visited was to see the doctor, Mohamed Awwad. My appointment was for 1/4 to 3 and I was seen by the doctor not many minutes after that time, I was most impressed. In fact, I was most impressed by the whole procedure, all staff were pleasant and made me feel at ease. The entire process flowed. On the 03/09/2024, I received an email from the hospital confirming the outcome of the appointment which informed me that this letter had been sent to my doctor with all the relevant information. This letter was beautifully presented with all the relevant information laid out. So, many thanks for the efficient and flawless patient appointment, I could find no fault with the entire procedure. Yours sincerely A very satisfied patient of Barnsley District General Hospital

Review titled Lovely Staff
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 09 August 2024
The staff were very supportive and gave good advice but they seemed a little frightened by the senior nurse. When mistakes occurred (several times) the staff were excellent at trying to get it fixed but had to try again and again to get things right. I was told things that could not be true by a doctor which was very upsetting. The care was very good, they had just got a new machine which worked better than the previous machine. They used a very expensive drug for the care. There was usually two nurses just looking after one person and even the grumpy one was lovely. They looked after all the symptoms well and were helpful when any pain or anxiety started. Their behaviour did change when the senior nurse came on and started telling people that they were making mistakes. It was upsetting to watch a nurse being told off right next to the bed. The staff nurse was really professional and continued to smile and was kind despite this. The feeling was that the ITU is moderately dysfunctional but that the staff work hard to make sure that this does not impact patient care.
