  1. Review titled Excellent response to my situation

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Barry Highland - Posted on 05 June 2024

From the first consultation with my GP on 4/4/24 to the 5/524 completed scans and surgery to have tumour removed. The whole urology team along with the Kennedy Way surgery were extremely helpful and pro active in speedily treating my condition. We hear a lot of unpopular reports regarding the NHS, and I know that there are some of them that are true. But I am posting this, because I believe that the good news regarding the NHS should also be mentioned.

Please, you guys really need to pick up the phone. A nurse rang me in the morning today (5/4/24), to give me advance notification of an appointment for a procedure - the letter would shortly be in the post. Upon checking my diary, I found that there was a clash with an appointment for a procedure at Ipswich Hospital. I have been beyond desperate trying to contact the above department to discuss this problem but to no avail. I have rang over 40 times today, and all I hear is " Sorry , your call cannot be answered at the moment. Please call again later.". How long is this 'moment' ???. I cannot have two operations in the space of two days ..... so please will you pick up ????

  3. Review titled Appalling outpatient communication

Rated 2 stars out of 5

When I received my appointment letter, for a planned procedure,I enquired straight away where it was as I knew their was not a clacton ward at colchester hospital. I even had a phone call the week before to confirm the date, time and clacton. 3 day diet and bowel prep. on arrival no one there. A member of reception team who noticed we had been waiting on the cameras came to assist us, managed to find another member of staff who contacted colchester hospital,to find I should have gone there. To you both, I cant thank you enough for getting them to wait untill we travelled there and got my procedure done. To the person who phoned me and told me to go to clacton, you should be disciplined for the stress and upset you caused. When appointment letters are sent out make sure they have the correct location on.

  4. Review titled Unhelpful bureaucracy?

Rated 3 stars out of 5

Two examples: Dermatology - I have had alopecia for over 3 decades. At the outset was referred to wig providers through Colchester hospital. Over the years it had not been necessary to go back for repeat prescription for the wig as the wig providers had details. The hospital now has a new policy whereby a fresh referral is required. Fair enough. However, it's little short of bureaucratic. Telephoned the dept but they did not return my call for a week, but called within minutes of I emailing them to say would raise the matter at a senior level. I was told I have to see my GP who then has to refer me to a dermatology consultant, then once I have seen the consultant he/she will deal with the referral. Is a referral and all that involves really necessary? My alopecia is the same as before which the wig provider or the GP can see. It would waste GP time, increase the waiting list whilst waiting for dermatology app, and waste consultant's time, all this when govt is trying to reduce waiting list by authorising pharmacies to take over some medicinal roles. Oral Surgery - been in pain for some weeks. On day of app and over the weekend had excruciating pain, not able to open mouth to speak, eat or drink, without experiencing agonising pain. Had not been able to eat/drink much over the weekend. Asked the doctor to give pain numbing injection. Declined, saying the appointment was for consultation only and advised me to take stronger pain killer tablets as paracetamol had had little impact. Appreciate the doctor would have only been following the policy, not to treat the ailment during consultation appointment. Options left - put up with pain for several more hours waiting for stronger pain killer to take effect if it did, and not be able to eat/drink much again, or could go to A&E and add to the clogged up waiting room though on a previous occasion when had to go to A&E for the same type of pain was told no one available to deal with pain in the mouth. Are the management who make such policies deliberately trying to create longer waiting list to justify their demand for increased funding from the govt, or is it just that they have absolutely no idea of how to make practical policies. Should get rid of most of such managers and make the consultants in charge of policies for their department.

  6. Review titled Bad phone system

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Isabel - Posted on 23 March 2024

This review system does not list the Urgent Treatment Centre so had to select 'Don't know'! Tried calling the phone number on Col hosp website, system asks what department you want, said Urgent Treatment Centre then system offered options of Harwich or Claxton but not Colchester!

  7. Review titled It made such a difference

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I attended the out patience dept at 0815 am on 26th march, was received by the nurse who on checking my details, spotted it was my birthday. She then sang "Happy Birthday" to me. Even the consultant wished me a very happy day. One of my most memorable birthdays. Thank you to the team.

  10. Review titled Amazing team

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Laura Addison - Posted on 24 April 2024

I was booked into Lexden Ward for an induction on 27/03. My care from the start was excellent and once our baby was born we couldn’t have asked for a more caring team. All of the staff from reception, to midwives, cleaning and food teams were extremely friendly and helpful. Well done to all of the student midwives who were just as good and to the midwives mentoring them. The delivery suite team supported me through birth and helped the experience be the best it could possibly be. It is by far the hardest thing a woman will go through physically and to have such a supportive team around makes a huge difference. I had to return to the ward a week after birth due to a complication when home, however upon visiting the maternity triage at midnight the team there were caring, reassuring and professional which helped to make a quite scary experience much less worrying. We were readmitted for 2 nights following this and my care was once again second to none. As we had a cluster feeding week old we were fortunately able to have a side room which we were extremely grateful for as it allowed my partner to stay and support me more and alleviated the worry of us keeping the rest of the ward awake when our baby cried in the night. There was a particularly lovely lady working with the food team on this occasion, apologies we did not catch your name but this was a blonde lady who worked the full shift from breakfast until evening. She really looked after us and took time to chat. During this admission our baby had his 5 day check and at this it was noted that he had a tongue tie, the follow up at the tongue tie clinic was just as good and the team there helpful and supportive. Again just this week when we were referred from the UTC to the children’s ward(separate from maternity services) for our babies distress with gas and reflux the nurse and doctors on shift were excellent and looked after us during the process of examination, diagnosis and prescribing some medication to help. Our son is 4 weeks old tomorrow. All in all the last month has been the hardest of our lives but we couldn’t have asked for better care than we have received at Colchester Hospital. Thank you to every one who looked after us throughout the whole process. We’re forever grateful. ☺️
