Review titled Poor and upsetting

We spent 17 hours in A&E yesterday (5th-6th February 2024). It was so upsetting seeing my husband and other patients in pain without proper support from the professionals they are relying on. I am thankful that after 17 hours we had a prescription given to us, but we still haven't been told the root cause. It was distressing to see a lady collapse in the A&E waiting area after not being seen for an extended amount of time. The doctors slowly walked towards her whilst her daughter started screaming "Please do something! We've been waiting for hours and we're losing her!". There was also a lady bent over in pain from kidney stones asking for some pain medication whilst she waited; she was repeatedly dismissed by the care professionals. The security team had a few difficult patients to deal with throughout the night. However, I was ignored when I notified them about a man rolling weed in front of me in the waiting area. The man then resorted to walking around the facility with the unlit cigarette in his mouth, further nauseating those around him. It was a shocking experience. The night was made more stressful by the main water machine and coffee machine, both of which were out of order. In a facility where people are ill and are forced to spend an extended amount of time in the waiting area, it was confusing to also see that the vending machine only offered chocolates, biscuits and crisps. I would suggest that the hospital offer some healthy and substantial snacks too for the health of the patients in their care. I asked for updates about the timings throughout the night as I was meant to be at work yesterday (I wasn't able to go in due to this experience). We were initially told a four hour wait, then a six and half hour wait, and eventually an eight hour wait. I was met with vague responses, a lack of care and an absence of understanding each time I asked, which caused further distress to my husband who was in acute pain. Whilst I hope not to have the disadvantage of revisiting this hospital again, I do hope this review will encourage Croydon University Hospital to hire more compassionate staff, provide more thorough training, and dramatically improve their A&E department for the health and well-being of those in need. I am extremely disappointed. Thank you.

Review titled Rude and unhelpful

My partner was admitted into A/E and have not been able to get through to the hospital to get an update. We are OAPs both with health issues trying to get some information that she may have been discharged treating me like I am stupid being rude and unhelpful and disconnecting call Trying several times to get through on the phone for hours.

While typing this review I have called the Geriatric Medicine Unit, Croydon hospital, three times without answer. I have decided to hold until someone surely will answer the phone has been ringing for 54 minutes

Review titled I felt completely dismissed

I went to A&E recently after a fall. I had a swollen/bruised wrist and hand as well as a minor head injury. The first nurse I saw was thorough, ordered an x-ray and CT and even took me there. Waited a while (which is expected) and was finally back in the waiting room after 3 hours. I then however waited another 2 1/2 hours for my results only to be rushed to dismissal. I was told x-ray and CT normal, rest your concussion and come back if anything gets worse, and discharged immediately. What I'm unhappy about it that I have broken this wrist before, exact placement and all, and the proper procedure for this specific fracture is a fracture clinic referral for another x-ray in 2 weeks as it doesn't always show up immediately. That didn't happen - I felt completely dismissed.

Attended with my partner after receiving a phone call to attend an appointment asap. Service was good but I’m concerned that relatives are not allowed to attend the appointment, even when requested by the patient. I asked why and was given no explanation other than it is the rule and it’s a ward so that’s why. As someone who works in the NHS this is not correct and when an escort is requested by the patient, it should not be denied. Especially when there is no clear explanation, surgery was being discussed and my partner needed someone to support him. Very disappointing

It makes no sense that prescriptions when treated at this hospital must be picked up at the terrible and under staffed Lloyds on site, rather than being given to patient to use at their local pharmacy. Today I saw a heavily pregnant woman collapse in the long standing queue just to get a ticket in order to then wait. Doctors care to care for her but there were very elderly people with heart conditions waiting two hours without seating being available. It’s ridiculous. It’s a dangerous, inefficient system and needs to be changed as soon as possible. I write this still waiting for my prescription, which I had to skip work to come and collect as it takes me an hour to get to the hospital. Soviet.

Review titled No MRI results available at appointment

I waited with my daughter for over an hour to see the doctor to get the MRI results at fracture clinic and was finally told they were not available after approximately four weeks. So nil could be done to help me. Another long wait in prospect and such a waste of time for everyone. The department needs to check that results are there before sending out appointments. Excuse given was" too many patients and not enough doctors

Review titled Lack of compassion

I waited for half a year for an appointment with gynecology at Mayday because I am suspected to have thoracic endometriosis. My life has a been a hell since all this started and when I got to my appointment I felt a complete lack of compassion or getting any reassurance from the doctor I was seeing. I could hardly get any words out because I felt like everything I said was dismissed because apparently I have regular periods. I have the hormonal injections which luckily help a lot, but I am not back to how I was before this nightmare started. I now have to wait for an MRI appointment (probably another 6 months) and god knows how long before someone looks at it and speaks to me about this. It's an awful feeling to go see a doctor to feel like they don't have time to listen and also that they don't show any sort of compassion as if I am not human. Whenever I go here the experience I have is absolutely horrific.

Review titled I felt as if I was really being taken care of

I had an abscess on my neck. I had an MRI scan and was given antibiotics. All the doctors were wonderful. I felt extremely safe in their arms from the surgical team to even in the ones who first took my blood tests and gave me antibiotics. They were such good vibes and positive, even after having so many patients to deal with during the day, I haven’t felt so grateful in my life. The doctors were extremely well-spoken and spoke me through the procedures and everything they were going to, which also made me feel more safe as I knew what was going to happen to me, what was going on and how it it was going to be sorted and fixed. I felt as if I was really being taken care of and honestly I wish the best for that entire surgical team and every Doctor that helped me at Croydon University Hospital I don’t even think this is enough to show my gratitude.

I was impressed by the courtesy and promptness shown to me, right from the reception to all the nursing staff and operatives. They were very patient and understanding with the situation of people aged 80 (+). In spite of the current pressures on the NHS, their diligence and forbearance were remarkable. My sicere gratitude!
