Review titled Lack of Autism expertise and understanding
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 23 June 2024
My autistic daughter has been detained under sect 3 of MHA. The staff have no expertise or understanding of her needs and no adjustments have been made for her autism which is her legal right. The majority of staff just don’t care, and key personnel on the ward are unsympathetic. They state they will do things but they either don’t or it takes a long time for them to follow through with their decisions. Her mental and physical health have deteriorated since she was detained in Jan 2024. Staff are refusing to supervise her going outside inspite of agreement of responsible clinician. Doctors blame nurses, nurses blame care staff. This place has to be one of the most depressing places I have visited. It is more like a prison than an acute psychiatric ward. Avoid this place if you wish to retain good mental and physical health. In spite of repeated requests my daughter to date has received no psychological therapy to help her recovery. In fact there has been a deterioration in both her physical and mental health. A totally depressing experience, not sure how this place can be recognised as good by CQC.

Review titled Returning Psychiatry to Victorian Times and Methods

Unbelievably this trust has (last year) built 2 new cells in the old part of the hospital where they can hold patients for upto nearly a week (5 days and nights in my relative's case). These are windowless rooms, with a highish ceiling and dark grey walls and floors. All that's missing is the padding. Then, knowing you are visiting every day, they pack your relative off to a hospital in Kent. Policies that only add stress to families at what they must know are already difficult times.

Review titled Never again

I was sectioned under 136 and when I arrived I was in the care of police, they put my in a room that was literally like a prison cell, we may have mental health but some of us don’t deserve this treatment. I was in there for all most 6 hours before the team came to see me and I was already stressed out being up at the hospital for 16 hours and then in this room for another 6, got treated like a criminal basically. The facilities are worse then ACU St. Peter’s and I think that this contributes to the factors of mental health. If your kicking and screaming then yeah it would be the best place but if your quiet and content it would be ideally better to make it a little bit of a more comfortable experience so we’re not stressing out. I have PTSD and this place actually is in one of those boxes now and has made it worse. I am no better then I was then before I went in and it was a complete waste of time because I’m still doing what I went in there for. Doesn’t matter what we’re going this this is bottom line, this place is not for everybody and I think certain areas should be re thought about.
