  1. Review titled Oncology Services

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Being diagnosed with bladder cancer is a shock and life changing. I want to give a big shout out to the Emergency Helpline team. When my back was against the wall to help my partner calling them has resulted in feeling heard, understood and subsequent visits to the wards 10, 11, 12 have been amazing. Due to a GP not responding to a discharge summary I had run out of medication. The GP eventually gave a prescription at 6pm on a Friday. The pharmacy did not have the drugs and told me to try somewhere else. I desperately went to the few remaing pharmacies open on a Friday after 6pm. none could provide the medication without waiting for 3 or 4 days. It was needed for the next day. In desperation I called the Helpline. I burst into tears when the person on the other end (apparently can't mention names in reviews) professionally dealt with issue in a kind and supportive manner. Thank You Thank You. The relief I felt was overwhelming. Without this brilliant service being available carers like me would be left feeling helpless and fearful for their loved ones. In the list of departments to choose for feedback this service is not listed so I had to pick 'don't know' I hope the team manage to get this feedback. Thank you once again.

  2. Review titled Brilliant NHS.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

This is a tribute to the oft-maligned NHS. My wife 76. We have been together since she was 16. She still is 16 to me. She suffered from severe breathing difficulties for three weeks. Our GP sent us to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary A&E on Tuesday. At 10 in the morning it was full. We went through the process, were seen by a doctor who immediately sent her for an X ray. Fluid on the lungs. He sent her for a catscan to discover the severity. It was severe. She was immediately put onto oxygen and had to be transferred to Calderdale Hospital, where they have a specialist unit, but first it was imperative they start draining the fluid. A needle into the right lung, a tube into a plastic container and within an hour they had drained two litres. That's three and a half pints. By this time it was 10 in the evening. An ambulance transferred her in the early hours, still taking oxygen and still attached to the container. The paramedics were amazed at the quantity. Admitted to Ward 2 for critical assessment. Next day still on oxygen and pumped full of antibiotics. A new container was fitted and another quarter litre of fluid removed. By now she could walk to the loo carrying the container: she called it her designer handbag. A consultant explained she had had pneumonia as well as fluid on the lungs. More x-rays and another scan and discharged home last night (Thursday). My wife had been fearful of what the original scan might find, dreading the possibility of something fatal: this nearly had been. We have relatives who have died from fluid on the lungs. A&E at Huddersfield was as packed at 10pm as it had been at 10am. There was a camaraderie among patients, a willingness to help each other that was humanity in the raw. The staff were amazing. They were over-worked but maintained a smile, empathy and compassion. They see scores of ill people each day but make every one of them feel special. The paramedics were equally great. The staff at Calderdale Hospital were also superb. Nothing too much trouble. The same empathy and compassion. Isn't it time the medical staff were paid what they are worth? That real money is spent on hospitals? We found the NHS working at full stretch is still magnificent because of the spirit, skill and care of its staff. These are professionals who care for people. Unlike the entrepreneurs who cashed in on Covid by making millions from unusable personal protective equipment in a scandalous government scheme that became a scam. Appreciate and protect the NHS.

The orthotics department repaired a lining in my boot, at the same I asked if they could alter the boot heel to match my own measurements they did this perfectly and I would like to thank them for their help, my walking is now much improved.

An elderly friend was taken into HRI late at night and after being seen was sent home alone at 5am via long winded patient transport apparently nothing wrong. Late the next day they called and wanted him back asap for a CT scan. Now as I write we have been here for hours having finally been seen by a nurse who had no clue why he was here. She said she would get him a cubicle and disappeared…..45 mins later she still hasn’t come back. Friend in agony and all reception say is he’s been referred back in. No clue what’s happening staff don’t care about the extreme pain of an elderly man. To add to the insult and indignity there’s a large poster in the waiting room saying Compassionate Care……I think not!

  7. Review titled Great staff and service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Went with my mum who was suffering with arm and chest pain. The receptionists were welcoming and understanding. We saw the triage nurse who was thorough and kind, saw the health care assistance numerous times for blood pressure checks and taking blood who were apologetic for the long wait and said to ask of we needed anything. Finally, the doctor was lovely and did double checks ro ensure my mum was ok- we were there a total of 10 hours which I know is a long time- many people moaned and groaned about the long wait, forgetting this is a free service;well run department with great staff.

  8. Review titled Just wanted to say thank you

I got referred to the macular department by specsavers because one eye was losing vision and the colour green, within a week I had my appointment and they were super friendly and patient with me struggling not to blink. The whole process wasn't that long or painful, they confirmed my macular was fine the same day and gave me a referral to Sheffield where unfortunately a cancer was diagnosed. Given how serious it ended up being I just wanted to leave a review saying thankyou especially for the rapid turnaround on everything.

Excellent care from all staff, just complete admiration for the people who work there and have to put up with the constant abuse and awful language from so called patients.
