Review titled Ward 11a South
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Michelle B - Posted on 16 May 2024
I was admitted as an emergency to this ward. All the staff and I mean all of them from the porters and cleaners to the ward doctors were fantastic, some in particular but you're not allowed to put names on here which is a shame. The people who brought you tea and coffee throughout the day were my favourites, always with a smile and if you're in hospital a good cup of tea or coffee can make the world of difference to your mood, I can't speak for the coffee as I didn't have any, but the tea was outstanding every time! The nurses are fantastic, always willing to try and help you in any way they can and the ward doctors actually care about you, you're not just a case number to them, these guys work in a tremendously high pressure environment with some antiquated rules and regulations, but they are always smiling and ready to help! All of the ward staff, in any ward, in any hospital are the true angels of the NHS!

Review titled The most amazing birth experience
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Lucy Dore - Posted on 19 May 2024
I gave birth on the Midwife Led unit on 16/05 and honestly felt like we could not fault the services of this team. Myself and my partner found the experience so positive and can honestly say we enjoyed the experience. The team could not have done enough for us and we were given as much support or privacy as we needed. The birthing room was set up beautifully (not unlike some of the birthing rooms I’ve seen at the Portland) and we were able to stay in there until we left with our little one. As first time parents we were so grateful to have had this experience and I really encourage other parents who are eligible to go on the midwife led side. We were a little worried about being away from doctors in case of emergency but when the red light was signalled as little one was struggling to breathe when she came out, we had over 10 people in like a shot, they kept us calm and within seconds they baby was happy and back in my arms. We personally did not feel that our care was in any way compromised and if anything, due to the ward being very quiet, I actually think we got a far better response than we would have had if we went into the consultant led unit as it is naturally busier. I also wanted to leave some comments about the community midwife support received as I also feel we have had exceptional care in this regard also. Our community midwife has seen me for every single appointment since pregnancy and has even gone to the trouble of moving around holiday just so I can be seen by her continuously. She has made it to my home twice on times where home visits have been easier for me and has always been around to help me even out of hours. To me this is the true definition of ‘above and beyond’ and way beyond any expectations I had. There’s a lot of pressure on the NHS (particularly maternity services) at the moment but I can honestly say we couldn’t have been more looked after and we were so lucky to come in contact with such wonderful people who truly deserve some positive recognition.

Review titled Extremely poor communication
Rated 1 star out of 5

My mother (96)was admitted to the lister on Monday evening. My family and I have tried repeatedly to make contact with the hospital for updates via telephone. Now more than 36 hours later I finally spoke to a nurse. Surely when family live far away, someone could call with updates?

Review titled Very organised and efficient service
Rated 5 stars out of 5

My son had an accident in school and hurt his wrist. The X-Ray showed a fracture of distal radius. Straight after, the bones were re-aligned and his wrist put in a cast. A second X-Ray was done to check the correct alignment was achieved, which was the case despite some difficulties. Finally we had the discussion with the orthopaedic surgeon and agreed on the next steps (surgery). 2 days later, the surgery date was confirmed for 4 days after the incident. The overall process took 5 hours and was very efficient. The way my son injury was managed was excellent.

Review titled Difficult to contact
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Alan - Posted on 29 May 2024
Currently undergoing Immunotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer. My GP is unable to supply the Creon medication I need. Trying to contact somebody at the hospital for advice is proving useless. The telephone number I was given at commencement of treatment is out of order, and main enquiry desk is not answering.

Review titled lack of empathy
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 13 May 2024
Hi, I went to A&E at around 7.15. I was seen by a doctor around 9-10pm. I came in because I had bleeding and was 19 weeks pregnant. I was examined by the doctor who wasn't telling me anything until I asked. He said with no empathy or care that it might be a miscarriage or it might not. At that point I was still in shock and didn't expect to be told that way. I am disgusted in the way this was handled.

Review titled Colonoscopy - exemplary care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Joanna - Posted on 20 May 2024
I had a colonoscopy on Saturday, my care from start to finish was outstanding. All the staff were so friendly, a nurse held my hand throughout and was reassuring and put me at ease. The endoscopy doctor was professional and thorough. They made sure I was comfortable and understood what was going on. I am a doctor myself and this level of care makes me very proud to be part of the NHS. Thank you

Review titled Fantastic staff
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Charlotte Allwood - Posted on 29 May 2024
From visiting the hospital for routine maternal appointments to giving birth via emergency c section, all the staff were fantastic and I felt mine and my babies health were of top priority at all times. The midwifes could not do enough for us and really helped when struggling with breastfeeding especially. Would have no concerns in using the services in the future. Thank you!
