  1. Review titled Amazing people

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I recently underwent a laparoscopy on the petter day unit. It was my first time in hospital, and my first operation. I was so incredibly nervous. Everything was so smooth and everyone was so so kind. I got to ask all the questions I wanted and they talked me through everything I was anxious about. They took my neurodivergence in to consideration and made me feel extremely at ease. My anaesthetist especially was incredible, if I was to ever need another operation I can only hope they’re as great as he was. My only slight issue was my surgeon spoke to me about the operation when I was still coming round, I didn’t even have my eyes open. Seeing as I couldn’t remember what was said to me I had to wait until my discharge summary a few days later to find out what happened during the surgery. The nurses were great and the whole day was extremely easy. I am extremely thankful for the experience I had.

  2. Review titled Kind and efficient care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I had to attend A&E after a fall whilst on holiday in Woolacombe I was treated with the utmost kindness and respect by all concerned from the receptionist to the nurses and doctors. Yes I had to wait hours but I was seen, treated and advised. Those people are marvellous in the circumstances they face every day of their working lives

  3. Review titled Very Poor

I was referred to the Urology department at Nddh, in June 2024, after having a recurring Uti. It was established by Mri scan etc, that I had kidney stones, which were causing my UTIs. I last had contact with the department in July and have heard nothing since. Although i had a CT scan in July, as of today, late October, I've heard nothing, no follow up, no contact, nothing. I've left messages on the departments answerphone, and have still not heard back. In the meantime, I've been on antibiotics for 7 months, another medication for, bladder wall thickening and an enlarged prostate, all a result of constant UTIs, that NDDHs urology department, obviously couldn't care less about.

I visited the hospital today for two procedures and from the minute I entered I was looked after so well. Booking me in, explaining everything to ensure my anxiety was low The procedure itself was great and again the consultant and staff were fantastic The after care was great Everyone should be proud to work in such a great environment

  6. Review titled A credit to the NHS

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was taken by ambulance to the North Devon Hospital in the early hours of Monday morning. A viral infection had left me with an acute adrenal crisis and I was in a very poor state. The patience, kindness and professionalism of the ambulance crew and the A&E staff was exceptional and thanks to them they were able to stabilise my condition over several hours and I was eventually moved to the Medical Assessment Unit. Now we often hear opposition politicians these days say that the NHS is broken. Well I have news for them. Not at the front line it isn’t at Barnstaple. They have the most amazing staff - and I’m sorry I’m not allowed to name individuals here, or else I would. I was then moved to the Roborough Ward where once again everyone from the health care assistants, to the cleaners, to the meal servers and before I left the pharmacy team all combined to make my stay as comfortable and stress free as they could. I can’t thank them enough. They are a wonderful team of professionals who work seamlessly to underpin the true values of the NHS. It was a scary few days for me and my wife but their kind assurances shone through and helped us come out the other side. If the NHS is broken it is at the management and regional level and these front line staff deserve so much better.

  7. Review titled Wonderful staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Had to take my daughter in for day surgery to have teeth removed and the staff absolutely wonderful. We ended up being there for about 10 hours and they looked after us so well and never put any pressure on us to leave before she was ready to go.

  8. Review titled Glossop Ward

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Helen Garthwaite - Posted on 23 May 2024

I recently spent three days and nights on glossop ward and the care I received from everyone that looked after me was absolutely faultless. I was first in the A&E dept with very painful injury and I was looked after by a very lovely nurse who looked about me for 12 hours before I was admitted on to the day surgery ward. Every department I went to I was treat with the best care and it made a very difficult time a lot easier to deal with.

Fantastic experience today thanks to Peta Ward staff especially the lovely nurse who was put in charge of me. I was put at ease and looked after so well with the surgery and nursing staff being exceptionally informative and on the ball, I came away with my confidence in the NHS 100% as I have many times, thank you.

  10. Review titled Poor organisation of appointment

Rated 4 stars out of 5

    by C Hayes - Posted on 19 May 2024

I had a CT scan booked for6.30pm 18 may 24 with the mobile scanning unit for a scan of my shoulder in preparation for surgery on 28 may 24. I arrived 30 mins early and was happy to wait I was booked in and then called to the unit. I was then after a few minutes advised that they may not be able to the scan in the mobile unit as they did not have the protocol for this scan and that I may have to go to the main scan unit in the hospital or they may be able to perform the scan on the mobile unit if they could get the protocol. I was advised to wait whilst they contacted the main scan unit . I was then advised they had spoken to the hospital scan unit they were performing a scan and would call back . The staff on the mobile unit were very helpful in trying to sort this but we’re having problems getting the other unit to answer the phone or respond. Finally I was advised that the mobile unit staff had been advised that the hospital scan unit did not want to perform the scan and I would have to rebook. This is highly unprofessional and inconvenient to me we had travelled from Beaworthy and had prepared for this appointment as I have limited transport as my husband who drives me works full time and we had scheduled his work time around this I am unable to drive myself due to my severe shoulder injury. We now have to wait for another appointment to try and fit around his work hours and before my surgery on the 28 may!I have had my pre assessment and just needed this CT scan ready for my surgery. I am appalled at the poor assistance and lack of consideration by the hospital scan unit who basically refused to do the scan. I would stress that the mobile unit were very helpful in trying to get me seen but literally came up against the hospital staff not assisting them to get me seen as urgent. Shocking waste of my time fuel and stressful to now wait and see if they can scan me in time before my surgery, otherwise my surgery may be cancelled which I have been waiting many months for and am in severe discomfort. This could have been done whilst I was in site and I in no way am unhappy with the mobile unit team who tried their best to get me seen last night.I would ask for an investigation and full explanation as to why the scan unit would not see me. The hospital was extremely quiet and I feel this was a poor decision. I have to now go through all of this again hoping I can get to the next appointment whenever that may be, very upset about this lack of consideration at the time and feel there needs to be much better understanding of effort made by patients to attend to then be told to rebook
