Hello David Sorry to hear you suffered a burst appendix, that sounds very painful and I would imagine, quite a worry for you and your family. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, and how well looked after you felt by the staff on ward C4. It is always uplifting for a ward when it receives praise from patients about their professionalism, care and attitude towards patients. We will pass on your kind comments and I am sure they would like to wish you well in your recovery Regards Patient Experience Team

  3. Review titled Outstanding Care

I regularly have to attend Poole hospital as a day patient at least twice a year for the last 8 years following a major operation for throat cancer. The overall experience is second to none and I cannot praise them enough all of the staff are thoroughly professional, caring and explain every stage of the procedure. Having been a patient in various hospitals across the country throughout my lifetime I can honestly say they set the standard all the other hospitals should try and attain.

  4. Review titled Amazing people!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Rona Louise Lee - Posted on 06 December 2023

Admitted to A&E in a pain that I have before experienced. From the 111 staff, ambulance crew through to the A&E staff the service was exemplary though the waiting time/area leaves a lot to be desired, not a reflection on the very busy staff. Also, some very kind ladies, also awaiting treatment, helped me when I was feeling too ill to help myself. As I suspected I had a kidney stone something I sincerely hope I never experience again. The staff are so busy yet show great empathy for which I am grateful.

Dear Rona Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and apologies for the delay in responding to you. It is great to hear the care and teamwork between staff both internally and more widely with 111 & the ambulance crews was exemplary, but we do appreciate that the emergency departments on the Poole and Bournemouth sites are now showing the signs of age. The major investment going into the new BEACH building on the Bournemouth site will make a huge difference to patients requiring emergency care within our region. It is lovely to hear that staff and other patients showed empathy and gave you the support you needed during your visit. We hope you are now recovered from whatever was causing you pain and if it was kidney stones that you have not had any further trouble from this. Regards Patient Experience Team

I arrived by ambulance after passing out on a walk. I was met with friendly, helpful people from the paramedics, nurses, doctor, technicians etc. I cannot praise them enough for their kindness. Thank you A&E

  6. Review titled Over 6 Six with a an 8 month old baby and not seen

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 22 November 2023

My son was brought to A&E under advice from 111. It took over 2 hours to be triaged and over 6 hours waiting and still not seen. It is now 2am in the morning and I told the nurse I was leaving and the wait is unacceptable and my child need to sleep. I was told that social workers would be called on me if I left. Clearly them are understaffed and that Poole NHS trust is not doing anything to elevate the problem. I think this is unacceptable for an 8 month old to be expecting to wait over night in blinding bright wait room. Would not wish for any parent to go though this in an emergency situation

  7. Review titled Couldn't ask for better care for my father

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mrs Clough for Mr R Fisher - Posted on 02 November 2023

Today my father of 92 years was discharged after having Pneumonia from Lilliput Ward. I couldn't fault the care. The nurses were attentive, caring, professional and had a sense of humour. They also kept me informed as I live a distance away. My father who usually finds something to complain about, didn't have a bad word to say about them, in fact he was full of praise. Thank you all for looking after him so well.

  8. Review titled Disappointing level of care

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 October 2023

I attended the A&E department on 9 October 2023 at 01.30 following advice from the 111 service. They suspected my symptoms may be a sign of an aneurysm. On arrival the receptionist was abrupt and said she could only record one of my symptoms so she put chest pain. I was then seen by the triage nurse who took a basic history and my blood pressure. He seemed totally disinterested. I was then sent to the waiting room and shortly after taken into the treatment area. The nurse there did an ecg and took bloods but totally dismissed me when I explained what the 111 service had sent me in with. At no point was I seen by a doctor. I was then sent back to the waiting room where I remained until 8.30 at which point I was transferred to the Acute Medical Unit. What a difference, I was seen by a nurse practitioner who took a full history and did a thorough examination before sending me for a scan which identified a fractured thoracic vertebrae. While I fully appreciate that the A&E was very busy, there is no excuse for the dismissive attitude of their staff. As an ex nurse myself I was disappointed to see such poor quality of care. Praise does however go to the AMU staff who restored my faith in nurses.

  10. Review titled 26 And A Half Hours In A&E

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 September 2023

On arrival at 11am hand over was made and i was moved to a corridor in a long queue but happy i was in safe hands and within 2-3 hours i was moved to another part of a&e. At around 4pm i had a chat to a junior doctor who was very surprised to see i hadn't had a cannula fitted so this was taken care of but didn't fill me with confidence. At around 6pm i finally had a scan on my brain and blood was taken. On returning from the scan i was moved to a cubicle and left unattended until 9.45pm. Nobody checked on me, nobody offered me a drink of water and nobody offered me anything to eat. I struggled out of my stretcher and hobbled to the reception desk and almost begged for a sandwich like Oliver Twist i thought. I'd been in the hospital for 10 hours without any food! Once I'd eaten it was time to struggle back into the stretcher and be left unattended again until 6am. Whilst I lay there unable to sleep, the a&e night staff continued their careless attitude, laughing and joking, on their phones and arguing with disgruntled patients. When the daytime staff took over at 6am you'd have thought it was a completely different hospital! Caring nurses did the rounds checking on patients and i was offered painkillers, which is another thing the night staff neglected, food and water. I felt like I was being looked after again! Nearing discharge time i was still in A&E, i never got to a ward, and was checked over by a senior consultant who was very brash, very condescending and rude. The lovely nurses rallied around attending to everyone and then a really decent physio chap checked me over and made sure i was mobile enough to leave and very kindly got me a walking stick. I was discharged at 1.30pm.

Dear Anonymous Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We are deeply disappointed by the care that you received overnight in Poole Emergency Department (ED), although happy to hear that this improved during the day. The ED’s of UHD remain under considerable pressure, but this does not excuse poor care. We have sent your experiences onto the senior nursing team, and we are using it as part of our campaign to refocus on basic care in an extremely challenging environment. Thanks to comments like yours it helps us to focus on areas of highest concern as seen through the eyes of our patients. Regards Patient Engagement Team
